Oxbow Sunflower CollageI spent a delightful morning painting a sunflower field at a beautiful farm north of town yesterday.

It has been awhile since I have been out to paint and I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

As with most Plein Air paintings that I do this one is almost finished but will get a little adjustment now that I have it in the studio.  You can see the step-by-step progress in this collage.

Sunflower View I  is an oil on canvas panel measuring 11″ x 14″.  SOLD!

Jeff with SunflowersI love watching students finish paintings that they are working on in class.  Jeff paints with us when he is in town and he just completed this wonderful sunflower painting as a Christmas gift.  It turned out great and I know they will be thrilled to receive such a wonderful surprise.

Art Camp Week 5 Seuret & BreezeYou may know Jeff as Breezy’s dad.  Breeze comes to class to and we love it when she does.  Here’s an old picture of Breeze posing with the kids at art camp one summer.  Of course, the kids loved seeing her come in for class!  If you are interested in joining a class contact kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com.  We would love to have you!

Beauty in Sunflowers

Beauty in Sunflowers

Yesterday I had the most wonderful morning painting “en plein air” at Oxbow Farm.  There is the most beautiful field of sunflowers there that just needed to be painted.  I tried to take step by step photos to share today of one of the paintings that I did.  When I work outside I can usually get a painting about 85-90% finished and then after a day or two of letting the paint “rest” I will complete it in the studio.

I call this “Oxbow Sunflowers 1“.  It is an oil on canvas measuring 9″x12” and is available framed for $275.

Being outside and painting sunflowers was such a treat after painting all the ball parks I have been doing the last few months.  It was a nice break.

Thursday at Art Camp we worked on a Van Gogh.  Since we’ve done Starry Night in the past we decided to something else that Vincent is well-known for, Sunflowers.  And didn’t these kids do a great job!  Just beautiful.

Oxbow Sunflowers is an acrylic on canvas measuring 24″x30″.   (SOLD) It was painted for the show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council that opens this Thursday called “Farms and Barns of Warren County” to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the county.  It will be available at the show this week.

This is painted combining two photos taken by the owner of this Rockland farm showing the brilliant large sunflowers that took over the landscape there this summer.
