Today I am introducing a new series. Each Thursday I will try to answer a “trivia” question about art. I get questions all the time about little things related to painting. This is where I will address those questions. Who knows? Maybe we will learn something on Trivia Thursday!
Today’s question is about the different length of handles on brushes. Why are some brush handles longer than others? The short-handled brushes are generally for watercolor painting or painting where you sit close to the piece you are working on. Long-handled brushes are used mainly for oil painting. When painting oils you want to try to stand up at the easel. That way you can stand back from work and look at what it needs. If the brush has a longer handle then you can put paint on the canvas by standing back from it and seeing where it needs more work. Many instructors teach new painters to put one stroke on the canvas and walk back a couple of steps. Then decide where the next stroke of paint should go, put it on and walk back. This is why you see painters on tv stepping back and looking at the work, generally with their head cocked to one side. The head cock is optional. 🙂

If you have ever wanted to learn to paint let me remind you that we have classes at the Blue Ridge Arts Council on Wednesday at 5 p.m. each week. All levels from beginner to advanced are welcome to join us. And if that time doesn’t suit you, just contact me to work out a time that will. I’d love to work with you so that you can enjoy creating paintings as much as I do.

Riding the Drive is an oil on 12″x12″ gallery wrap 1 1/2″ canvas. This painting was done as a Christmas gift for Allen who loves bicycling on the Skyline Drive. We live in an area where there are so many beautiful scenes to paint especially scenes from Skyline Drive across the Shenandoah Valley.
This is the beginning of a new painting year. Last year ended with 216 paintings done over the course of the year. I am working on a plan for this years goals and should have something ready to share this week. Until then I will continue with the daily work.

The Tree Out Front is an oil on 6″x8″ canvas and is available for $95. We still have lots of snow and it makes everything look so different that I want to paint all the scenes with snow on them now. I’ll have to settle for taking photos to build my reference file.
This is the reference photo and how it looks on the easel with the painting. This photo was taken from my front door looking to the left down the street.

The snow storm hit us here Friday night. It snowed all evening and most of the next day.
By the time it stopped we had about 26 inches around my place.
That’s when the digging out started. Yikes!
Luckily, Allen has a snow plow and came by and pushed out most of the driveway. What a big help that was!
But we still had to dig out the Explorer….
And Sandy’s car. Sandy is my friend and dog sitter. She was here to work at Delilah’s. (She’s also and excellent photographer and has her work at the shop.) Sandy was snowed in with us so we had to try to get her car out since she has to go to another petsitting job at the first of the week.
Look! There is a driveway under all that snow. Imagine that!!!
Even Truman and Jed has a little pathway dug out. We called it the pee pee path. 😉
Stay in and stay warm until the roads are cleared and we’ll post a new painting tomorrow.
