Loaves of Grandmother's Bread ready to go home

Loaves of Grandmother’s Bread ready to go home

The second day of the Pioneers & Primitives Retreat at Sassafras Farm with Suzanne McMinn was just as much fun as the first.  (See the first day here.)   The attendees spent the morning making bread…homemade, old-fashioned bread and each created a loaf to take home.  They also made the “Burnt” Sugar Cake cupcakes to take home.

They completed their potpourri by gathering more items and incorporating dehydrated sliced corn cobs, orange slices, apple peels, cucumber peels and some amazing scents.

And of course, we painted Folk Art Buckets!  And each person painted their own amazing design!  GREAT JOB!!!

So many other fun things happened as well with the many animals at the farm and I will try to describe some more of it to you tomorrow.  In the meantime you need to consider coming to one of our retreats next year.  We will have several scheduled next spring and summer.  Suzanne will post the descriptions and dates soon and I will share those with you.  It’s fun to learn new  (or improve) on skills.

Paper Painting - Walking the Dog

Paper Painting – Walking the Dog

I experimented more with painting with paper this week.  It’s relaxing to rip paper and fit it onto the form that I have pre-painted.  I like searching through the paper to find the ones that have the colors that I think will work for the shades of color I need.

It’s an interesting departure from painting.

Walking the Dog”, 9″x12″, paper over acrylic paint on canvas board.

Collage WedI mentioned yesterday that I had a few ladies come into The Studio for a collage class.  It was spur of the moment but we had a great time working together and these are the unique pieces that they created.  I think they were very pleased with them.

Collage is such a personal medium…especially when collecting the pieces to include.  It can be very meaningful to the creator.  I am hoping to do more with collage and paper painting in the very near future.

Paper Flamingo

Paper Flamingo

I love trying new forms of painting.  That is why I went to the workshop this summer at Nimrod Hall to discover more about painting with paper.  (Check it out here.)

This past week I had the opportunity to put that new knowledge to work when I had a few ladies come into The Studio who wanted to make  paper collages.  While they worked on their pieces I used an unfinished painting that I had used as demonstration piece for a kids class to show them what to do.  I really like how the flamingo turned out.

And now I have dug out at least 3 dozen old demonstration paintings that were just lying around that I think I will rework using paper.  It’s relaxing and fun!  So why not???!!!!
