Rag Quilts!

Rag Quilt 2.jpgWe had so much fun making Rag Quilts on Sunday at The Studio.  Where else can you learn to make a Rag Quilt and walk away with a finished product in just 3 hours???!!!!  Great job everyone.  And you asked for it so here it is….another one scheduled on January 8th.  And the best part….all the fabrics are flannel with Cats or Dogs motif.  You know I LOVE these.  Register early because we are very limited in space for these workshops.  Click here for more info and to register for the January 8th workshop.

Look at my new toy!  Thanks Sandra for telling me about this little jewel and for riding out with me to pick it up  yesterday.  Did  I need another sewing machine….well, probably not as I have four plus two embroidery machines…but really, can you ever have enough of these old Singers if they are operational?  And this one is but she’s going over to an expert machine maintainer to get a little cleaning and tune up.

I did some research on her last night and think I’ve learned that it’s a 1950’s model that is about 3/4 of the size of the average machine at that time.  My only confusion on this one is that it says “Made in Great Britain” on the top of the machine but the serial plate says “Made in Canada”.  What???  Got to learn more about that.  I wonder if the plate has been replace??  We’ll see what the expert says.  Anyway, it will come in real handy for the upcoming sewing classes that we have scheduled at The Studio.  Check out the quilt class here and the Simple Poncho class here.

Beautiful Quilts

Rag Quilt 9th.jpgThese ladies had a great time making Rag Quilts yesterday at The Studio.  And yes, we all made and entire lap quilt in one afternoon.  All that’s left is to wash it several times to let the edges “rag” and soften it it.  Nice job!

I’m preparing for the Rag Quilt workshop today at The Studio.  Machines are packed…quilt kits are cut and ready to put together.  This one is going to be fun.  It is sold out but there is one seat left at the one on October 22nd if anyone is interested.  (You can register here for it.)

And we are planning other quilt classes this fall and winter.  The photo in the bottom right corner is a Yo-Yo quilt and that will be one we do soon as well as a T-Shirt Quilt Workshop.  Many people have asked for that one.  So keep your eye on The Studio calendar (you can see it here) and join us soon for a workshop.

I’ve been cutting fabric, preparing for the Rag Quilt Workshop coming up this Sunday, October 9th and Saturday, October 22nd.  There is one seat left in each one so if you want to come make a quilt with us just click the date above and it will take you to the link to register.  These would make super gifts for the holidays so get busy now and you can have several done by Christmas.  Nothing beats a handmade gift!

Of course, to be sure I remembered everything I needed to share with the students I decided to make another one from some cute dog motif fabric that I had on hand.  🙂   Don’t you love it?!

Have you been wanting to learn to sew or quilt?  We are continuing our offerings at The Studio so you can develop some “indoor hobbies” before the cooler weather sets in.

Rag quilts are the latest trend in quilting. They are a quick, fun and different type of quilt offering a refreshing break from traditional quilting!

These are perfect for anyone who wants to learn to sew because all you need to do is sew a straight line.  (If you have a machine that you have been wanting to learn to use you can bring it and learn on your very own.)

And even if you have been sewing for years, this project will be a fun break and an opportunity to shake up your regular sewing.  We are going to have a workshop on Sunday, October 9th at 1 pm.  And here is the best part….Kelly is downsizing her fabric stash so all the fabric is included in the workshop fee PLUS the fabric kit will be cut and all ready to sew. There is a nice variety of fabric kits from which to choose or you can bring your own pre-cut fabric. (If you decide to bring your own you will be given instruction when you register on how to prepare the fabric.  But the fee is the same so why not choose a pre-cut kit?)

You will learn everything to make a rag quilt without having to take an hour or so to cut everything.  That means all you will have to do is sew and clip so you will have a lap throw quilt completed in about 3 hours!  Great, huh??!!

Don’t you want to join us?  Space is extremely limited. Only 6 students for this workshop.

FEE:  $79   Click here to register

Detail of Applique Bird

I got to play a little with free form applique this week.  I have been reading about it lately and wanted to give it a try so I found this plain sweater and decided to embellish it with a little birdie.  I like it.  Now I want to try more.

Sandra's Jacket with Parisian theme

A few days ago I posted about a jacket that I made with my friend Sandra.  (You can read about it here.)

Mine had a dog on it – surprise, surprise!  But Sandra’s had a wonderful Parisian theme.  As promised, here is photos of hers.  I love her Eiffel Tower.  She felted it and them embellished it with thread and sparkles.  Fabulous.  She is an absolutely master seamstress and fiber artists.

And it’s so nice to have a sewing partner that likes the same things I do.  I am sure I will learn so much from Sandra.  We are working on a different type of jacket this week.  🙂

One thing I seldom do anymore is have the time to create a project that is just for me.  I am always creating but generally it is commissions for other people or painting lessons for classes or Paint Parties.  This past week I spent two glorious mornings working on something for me!

My friend, Sandra, who is an amazing seamstress and fabric artist, met me at The Studio for a couple of mornings of sewing and gabbing.  We had soooo much fun!  And we made super cute jackets with lovely embellishment.  I had found this McCall’s pattern not long ago and wanted to try it and when I mentioned it to Sandra she was all in.  It is made by using two sweatshirts!  But of course, the embellishment is what makes it so personal.  I am sure you are not surprised to see a dog on mine.  (I will try to get a photo of Sandra’s to post soon.  Her’s has a Paris theme.)

What fun it is to make something while chatting with someone who has similar interests.  The time just flew by.  And it was such a delight that we decided we need to do it more so we will hopefully do something else next week.  🙂
