Coloring Book Dogs

Coloring Book Dogs

Several years ago I did this painting I call “Coloring Book Dogs” after I watched a kid at a doctors office coloring in a book there.  He was not at all concerned about the lines as he gleefully put color on every item on the page.  Each item was a different solid color with the color running outside the lines.  That made me think, “Why don’t we all color outside the lines still?  Why are we always so careful when we color/paint?” When I painted this piece with the dogs and a couple of others with other subjects (you can see them here) I had a great time.  It was fun! So this year I am going to attempt to “color outside the lines a little more”.  How about you?

SAMSUNG 149222_1516353543693_7348484_nThis is Paisley.  She is my niece, Lexie’s, dog although I suspect she is more her  mom’s dog.  I did a silhouette painting of her.  Just a quick and fun format for pets like this.  The canvas was 20″x30″ and I painted it in acrylic.

Monday I got a wonderful surprise.  I came home to a package.  I knew I had not ordered anything so I was really surprised when I opened it and found the 2013 Dog-a-Day calendar and letter saying that my Jeffie would be featured on February 20th.  I thought back to the last time I had sent a photo in to them for submission in their calendar and it had to be at least 5 or 6 years!  They must be really backlogged! Or maybe Jeffie’s story is just so special they didn’t want to miss it.  🙂  You can read more about my Jeffie here.  We really miss him and this is a really special tribute to our wonderful time with him.   This is what they chose to write:  “To the Rescue:  Basset/Lab mix Jefferson (or Jeffie, for short) was adopted at three months old from a Raleigh rescue group called Second Chance.  Kelly Walker of Front Royal writes that since then Jeffie has chased a robber from their home, and learned how to predict the occurrence of his “mom’s” migraines so that she can take her medication in advance.  Kelly can’t help but wonder:  Who rescued whom?”

I was thrilled when a neighbor and fellow dog lover asked me to paint Maddie and Kallie as a farewell gift for a friend that she works with here in town.  Their little group wanted to give her something special to remember them and since the lady loved her pitties they did this.  And I loved painting them.  Such pretty girls.

Maddie and Kallie, acrylic on canvas in a floater frame, 16″x20″, commissioned painting.

Yesterday afternoon at out Kids Painting Class we painted Lincoln.

Lincoln would love this, of course, because he loves being the center of attention!

And didn’t Logan and Sam do fabulous jobs on their paintings.

And they did this is just one hour.  WOW!

Just for a point of reference, this is the photo we used and my demo painting.  I didn’t get finished with mine yet.  But I will get to it.  🙂

Wednesday was almost the perfect day at Art Camp.  We worked on a pointillism piece as the students learned about a different type of art.

And the Adult Class joined us later in the morning.  Jeff brought Breeze with him to class and she was the most popular one in the class.  All the kids loved her and gave her cookies.  She’s such a great dog!

But the best part of the day for me was first thing this morning before Art Camp started when Maggie brought me this painting that she did for me!  I love it!  Thanks so much Maggie.  You ROCK too!

This is Sasha.  I painted her for the winner of a drawing that was held at Sassafras Farm in June.  Remember when I went over to paint the murals there.  Check it out here.

While there Suzanne had a fundraiser for the horse rescue where she got Patriot and Zip and anyone who donated $25 or more got their name entered in the drawing.  Sasha’s mom was the winner.

So here she is.

So off she will go this week to her new home.  Thanks Suzanne for giving the painting as the prize for your drawing.  And thanks for letting me help with the fundraiser for Phoenix Equine Rescue.  (See more about it here.)

Several months ago some friends who do wonderful work with German Shepherd Rescue stopped by Delilah’s with their latest rescue.  She doesn’t look at all like a German Shepherd!

This little Gem is the cutest thing.  She was bashful on her first visit but let me snap this photo.  I couldn’t resist painting it.

She came back to visit a few weeks ago and has grown a little and is more outgoing and a little less skittish.  And she is definitely a daddy loving girl.  Her dad has salt and pepper hair and a beard so they even look a little alike.

A Little Gem, acrylic on canvas, 16″x12″, available at Delilah’s or by contacting kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com .
