Fielding Archer Sunday morning Demo in process

Just returned from Nimrod Hall and a weekend of study with Fielding Archer, an amazing artist from Richmond who shared his unique style with the group painting there.  We learned so much by observing Fielding’s demonstrations and asking questions about how he works.

It was a terrific weekend of art at a beautiful place.  Can’t wait for next time.

Check out more about Fielding Archer here.

I’m back at Nimrod for a weekend of art.  This place is magical in that there are so many beautiful sights to paint plus the minute you drive through the gate your troubles and worries melt away.  Everyone is here to learn and create.  The atmosphere is terrific.  Today we’ll be working with Fielding Archer.  Can’t wait to try something new.   Enjoy these scenes from around Nimrod and I’ll share more tomorrow….image

The weekend at Nimrod Hall Art Program was just wonderful.  So many lovely things to paint….so many nice people with whom to paint.  The best thing about the weekend at Nimrod (other than the uninterrupted time to paint) is the artists who are there to teach and to learn.  Everyone is generous with their time.

Yesterday morning before I left I had an opportunity to observe Fielding Archer‘s demonstration.  He taught the Still Life weekend session and even though I was there to take the Plein Air weekend that Andras Bality offered I had a chance to watch them both work.  (Be sure to click the links and check out both of these artists.  Their works are amazing!)

So much to learn in a short amount of time.  It was a terrific experience.  The Studio was well represented by Kay, Gretchen, and Kathy – all from my Wednesday morning art class.  We had a great time!

I’m back at Nimrod Hall for “Art Camp”.  I have been looking forward to it ever since I was here last year.  Last night after a little Wine & Cheese Meet & Greet and a marvelous dinner our instructor challenged us to a little quick sketch painting at dusk.  Well, it was almost dark….but who cares….it was fun!  Here is what I was able to do in about 30 minutes before it got too dark to see.  Looking forward to more new challenges today.

This past weekend I went to Nimrod Hall in Bath County Virginia to attend an artist workshop.

Nimrod was established in 1783.  Originally it served as a summer resort dating back to the late 1800’s.  It operated as Camp Nimrod for Boys and Girls from the 1930’s to 80’s then it became an Artist’s Retreat.

Read more about Nimrod’s history here.

I found the beauty of Nimrod to be the relaxed atmosphere where you could just relax and create with other artists  who were there to do the same.

The beauty is inspiring.  You feel as if you have stepped back in time with screen doors slamming, breezes blowing and wonderful old-fashioned 3 meals a day following the ringing of the dining hall bell.  I really loved my time there.

Check out the information on the website.  They have weeks and weekends for artists and writers.  Many people go year after year so when they release the schedule in January you must sign up quickly to be assured a space.   It’s worth the time and the money.  Consider enjoying it for yourself.

Nimrod Hall

Nimrod Hall

One way that artists develop and improve their skills is by taking art workshops.  There are some really good ones available all around the United States and one nearby is a summer artist’s colony at Nimrod Hall in Virginia that has been going on for almost 30 years.   From their website, “Nimrod Hall is the sort of beautiful, rambling house that only time can build. Originally built in 1783, the main house consisted of little more than a two-story log cabin, and legend has that it was built as a stagecoach stop. Run for over one hundred years as a summer resort for people from all over the country, Nimrod Hall has a hotel register dating back to the turn of the century.”

I haven’t been to this one yet but have heard great things about it.  I am hoping this is the year I make it.  Here is the link to their site where you can learn more about their offerings this summer.
