Valley View Lesson I is an oil on canvas panel measuring 9″x12.

Valley View Lesson II is an oil on canvas panel measuring 11″x14″.

Both of these were lessons for Wednesday Night Art Class.  I just completed these recently.   New students almost always start with a landscape similar to these because it gives them a chance to learn about color mixing, tones, and composition as well as becoming comfortable with putting paint to canvas.

Truman can be so mean to Jed.  I have to play referee a lot while painting.  I will look around and there will be Truman laying in front of the doggie door and poor Jed sitting outside waiting to come in but Truman is blocking the way.  You can see the outline of Jed through the door in this photo.  I have to go over and move Truman to let Jed inside.  Basset Hounds are so ornery sometimes!

Bold Carrots is an oil on canvas measuring 10″x8″ and is available for $95.  This is another lesson piece that I have just finished up after it sat here for a little while.

Best Friends is an oil on canvas panel measuring 12″x9″ and is available for $145.  We did it in art class a few months ago and I just finished it.  Often in class I will begin a demo piece and then I start moving from student to student to help and I never  get back to my painting to finish it.  So this last week I had a chance to finish a few and I’ll show those to  you over the next few weeks.

The dog reminds me of my Jed sitting staring out at the world.  Jed does that often.

Here he is waiting at the cabin to go run and play in the snow a few weeks ago.  I think he was trying to decide if he got stuck in the deep white stuff if he would ever get out!

One of the great things about painting is that when you get really sick of the cold, gloomy weather outside you can go into your studio and paint something “warm”!

I found this photo that I took last summer and decided to warm up the climate by painting it.

Summer Beach is an oil on canvas panel measuring 10″x10″ and is available for $165.

Bring on the sunshine.

On March 4, 2000 I was lucky enough to adopt a little Black Lab/Basset Hound mix puppy.  He came with the name Black Bart but we changed it to Thomas Jefferson Walker and he came to be known as Jeffie.

Jeffie was three months old when we got him.  Truman was just about 3 weeks older and they were best buddies from the day they met.  They grew up together.

They partied together.  They did everything together.

Then Rosie joined the mix.

She was a puppy mill rescue who was scared of everyone and everything.  But Jeffie knew what to do.  He slowly helped her learn to play.  And he was the only one that she would play with.  They were so good together.

Jeffie was an angel and the sweetest dog I have every known.

Today we celebrate Jeffie coming to us.  We lost him at age 7  to cancer.  It was much, much too soon.  But we always think of him with a joyful and happy heart because he that is what he did for us.  He brought us much joy and happiness.

We miss you Jeffie.

I love impressionism.  Many people do.  When you ask someone what their favorite painting might be often people will name an impressionist’s work; ie.  Monet, Degas, Renoir, etc.

But do you know what invention truly help to develop the impressionist movement of painting outdoors and capturing light and fleeting images?  The paint tube!   Never would have guess that, right?  Before the invention of the paint tube which allowed artists to easily carry their mixed paints in the field they had to use, of all things, pig bladders.  Yuck.  I’m thinking I would have remained in the studio to paint too.

Shenandoah Valley View is an oil on canvas panel measuring 12″x24″.  This is a piece I started several years ago and while we’ve been weathered in the past few weeks I’ve taken the time to dig out a few old starts and get them finished.

This one is now framed and on display at Delilah’s.  Come by and see it.
