Dog Portraits on Wall I just completed a portrait of Mamie to hang on the portrait wall with the paintings of other dogs that have lived at this house with me.  Clockwise from top left you will see Eleanor Roosevelt (Rosie), Truman, Jefferson, Lincoln, Boo, and Jed Bartlett.  Now Mamie Eisenhower can be added to the wall.

Jan's Backyard Painting

Jan’s Backyard Painting

I enjoy my adult art classes so much.  I have enthusiastic students who are excited to be painting.  I especially love it when they paint pieces that are meaningful to them.  That was the case with Janice’s recent painting of a backyard scene from  her parents home.  She talked about good memories that her family has of being together there.  You could tell that it was something she cherished and now she has a wonderful painting that she can look at and keep those thought in mind.  Great job Jan! Now take a look at what some of the other adult students are working on this week in the Wednesday classes.  Keep up the good work everyone!

Sketch Book Notes

Sketch Book Notes

One of the best tips I can suggest for artists, both beginners and advanced, is to always carry a sketchbook.  Cameras are great too but often they do not capture the vividness of color.  And a camera can’t capture the “feel” of the scene.  These are things you can jot down in your sketchbook and they become invaluable to you when you begin painting that scene.  They will help you  to relive the scene making for a better painting.  I have a shelf full of sketch books and often refer back to notes I made years ago that reminds me of something I may have forgotten but will improve my work.  Take a camera; carry a sketchbook; make notes.  You’ll become a better painter.

Jeffie EnhancedFour years ago this past week (January 5th) we made the cold trek (it was during a snow storm) to get our Jed.  He’s the sweetest boy.  So Happy Adoption Day Jed.  We’re so glad we are your people!

Many of you know that I name my dogs using a presidential theme.  Jed was my first exception to the rule.  He is named for the fictional president, Jed Bartlett from the West Wing.  We loved that show and since he was already being called Jed and answered to it well we just went with it.

Read and see more about Jed here and see a step by step painting of Jed here!  Way to go Jedder Bean!  We love you big boy.
