Abstract Lesson in progress…..stand back! This piece is a lesson that we are working on with a private student in abstraction. This particular canvas is large, 30″x40″. Often when you think or see abstract work it is very big. This style lends itself to a large format.
When working with an abstract piece you can work it flat on a table or on the ground if it is very large.
Or on an easel if you have an easel large enough to hold the canvas.
This is my student, Marlene. She came to me several months ago wanting to learn to do abstract work. Now some people think that sounds funny because all an abstract painting is seems to be paint slung on a canvas, right?
Well no. You must think about color theory and shapes in order to make a successful abstract work.

Abstract Dreams I & II are acrylic on Gallery Wrap 1 1/2″ canvas measuring 12″x12″ each. They are SOLD.
I enjoy abstract work and combining colors to see what works together well. It is a lesson in trial and error.
I think these combinations turned out great!

Vineyard V is an acrylic abstract on gallery wrap canvas measuring 30″x40″. The colors of this painting invoke colors of vines and grapes and bottles and wine. And I really like wine.
Don’t forget that we will be having wine at the Opening Reception at Philip Carter Winery of Virgina on Sunday at 3 p.m. Please come out and join us for refreshments and to see this painting along with about 40 others. I’d love to see you Sunday. Directions are available on the winery’s website at www.pcwinery.com .

I have been working on a couple of abstract series lately. I have a new student who is studying abstract acrylic painting and it has gotten me motivated to paint in that way.
Non-representational abstract is much harder than one would think. It takes some planning of composition and color in order to develop a successful abstract painting.
I like this one. It is called Transition. It is an acrylic on gallery wrap canvas measuring 12″x12″ and is available for $195.

Sky-River-Land
While working on a couple of pieces for the upcoming River Show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council I kept thinking of an abstract piece that would represent the look of the river and it’s surroundings. This is what I came up with.
It is a nonrepresentational abstract on 24″x12″ gallery wrap canvas. The three smaller canvases each represent sky, river, and land.
I haven’t done abstracts lately but I really enjoy the freedom of the work. Maybe I’ll do some more this week.
