While I was in Michigan a few weeks ago I went to a little festival to check out the arts and crafts booths. But one of the fascinating things that I saw was a live statue.
There were students there posing at various locations. This girl was by far the best. She never moved a muscle. She stayed in this pose for at least 15 minutes and then she repositioned and posed again for I don’t know how long because I finally gave up and walked on.
It was so interesting to see….especially to see the expressions on kids faces when she did finally move. They didn’t think she was real and they jumped when she moved.
Dogs sniffed her and she didn’t blink. People talked to her and she didn’t move. Cameras flashed and she ignored them. She was good. 🙂

Last Wednesday night at Art Class we worked on an acrylic underpainting of a lemon. Instead of oil paint we used acrylic paint and only using black and white we painted the shading that we saw of the lemon.

Last night at Art Class, with the underpainting of dry from last week, we glazed over the acrylic paint with an oil paint and a blending medium to add color to our lemon. This is a technique that many painters use to get shading into their works. It sometimes makes it easier for students to see the subtle differences in shades and tones.
The Lemon measures 5″x7″ on canvas panel and is available for $45 by contacting me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com .
The final 3rd Thursday Art Walk of the season is tonight from 5 – 8 p.m. in downtown Front Royal. Be sure to come out and enjoy some refreshments and see the artist demonstrating. Delilah’s will have a tent sale as well as demonstrations. And I believe there will be pumpkin carving demonstrations at the Blue Ridge Arts Council. Just in time for the season! Come join us. We’ll look forward to seeing you.
(That’s me painting during a 3rd Thursday Art Walk. I was working on an abstract and I think I may have been channeling Jackson Pollack at the time! 🙂 )

Susan’s Weeping Cherry Tree is an oil on canvas measuring 16″x20″. I was commissioned by one of my very best collectors to do this painting of the tree in front of her house. So a few weeks ago I went out to her beautiful home and took some photos of the tree. Of course, it wasn’t blooming at the time so I had to be a little creative with the painting. That is the great thing about painting, you can put in or leave out whatever you want to when you are working with a photo.
This is the reference photo that I used for Susan’ painting.
I delivered the painting to her last night and she liked it very much. Yeah!!!
I’m always thrilled when someone buys more than one of my paintings. Having collectors who love your work is a tremendous boost for any artist. Thanks Susan!!!

The Festival of Leaves in Front Royal was Saturday and we had a good time despite the yucky weather in the morning. As the day went on the weather got better. I set up the tent and painted outside of Delilah’s. (Thanks to Sandy Patterson, a terrific photographer who has beautiful work at Delilah’s, for taking this photo.)

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to watch me paint and to visit with me. I appreciate all the nice comments about my art.
Also, thanks to everyone who registered to win the Free Art Lesson. And don’t forget that we have classes at the Blue Ridge Arts Council on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. We’d love for you to join us. Just contact me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com if you have any questions about classes.
I completed this painting during the festival. It is a fall version of the painting that I did a few weeks ago for the Strasburg Rotary Club. Fall offers many colors to put into paintings. It really brightens everything up!
This is the original version of the painting.
Both paintings are available for purchase. They measure 8″x16″ and are oil paintings on canvas panel.

I thought I would share a little more about our recent trip to Michigan. We stayed at a nice resort at Boyne Mountain where their was a little airport right at the hotel. It is a ski resort area so I took the lift up one day and took a few pictures. This is the facility with the airport on the right. You can see how close it was.

And this is a better shot of all the airplanes that were there.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was meeting one of the employees at the airport. She works there with her dad. Her job was to chase the geese off the runway. Her name is Sasha and she’s a hard working rescue dog.

It was a great trip and good to see a part of the country where we don’t often travel. I hope to paint from some of the pictures that I took soon.
On another note, tomorrow, Saturday, is the Festival of Leaves in downtown Front Royal. Please come visit us at Delilah’s. I’ll be demonstrating painting at our tent most of the day there and would love to talk to you.

This past weekend we flew to Michigan to Boyne Falls. This is what it looks like from the air.
We met with a group of folks that all have Commander airplanes. It’s a great group of folks. All crazy and fun! We did a fly out one day to Mackinaw Island. This is the view from out of the back window of the other planes lined up on the taxi way all ready to fly out together to Mackinaw.
You can see the prop in this shot of Mackinaw Island. The big white box you see is the Grand Hotel.
The great thing about Mackinaw Island is that there is no motorized vehicles. So when we all arrived and call for the taxi, this is what came to pick us up.
Life is definitely moving at a much slower pace on the island. It took 20 minutes to get from the little airport to the downtown area. This is the view from the “taxi” of the road leading to the Grand Hotel.
And the porch on the front of the Grand Hotel as we passed by in our “taxi”.
And another view of the hotel as we passed her by.
And this is the crew of pilots that made the trip over to Mackinaw. About 20 men and me!!! You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to get them all moving in the same direction. It was just like herding cats!
It was a great afternoon and I’m so glad that I got to see Mackinaw Island. It is one of those places on my list to see and it was worth it. The day was gorgeous and I got lots of great photos for my reference file for painting. Maybe you’ll see one soon.

Since yesterday’s post I added in the grass and some details.
And finally the finished painting! I like the way it turned out. It is an oil painting on canvas panel measuring 12″x16″ and is available by emailing me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com .

And you can see that Truman got really excited about it. He slept through about the last hour and a half of the painting time. Working really wears him out.

Back to work on the old truck. Now that I have the truck laid in where I like it I have started on the background. The sky was very blue the day I took the photo but I don’t want it to overwhelm the main focus of the painting, the truck. So I lightened the sky a little.
And added some puffy clouds.
And the mountains in the distance….
More to come tomorrow.

I am working hard on the Old Truck. I don’t know why I love it so much but I do. It has so much character!!! The longer I look at the reference photo the more I see.
Here is the beginning of my painting with the photo. I hope to finish it in the next few days but I keep looking at it and seeing more I want to add. Yikes!
