Got to paint outdoors in this beautiful weather this weekend out at the cabin. I got a great start on a piece but when I got home yesterday and wanted to put finishing touches on it I realized that I had left it there. So maybe I can finish it up in a few weeks.
And this is what the helpers do while I paint. What would I do without them? 🙂

One of the things I like best about working at the shop is that I meet really interesting people who are visiting our town. Last weekend I met these nice folks who were in town for the week for Spring Break. They were staying out at the State Park and doing fun things each day. I invited them to come paint with us if they had time.
Annabelle joined the extra-large class that we had on Wednesday. See more here. They did a great job painting and had fun too. So nice to meet you Lori and Annabelle.

Generally during Spring Break I have only one or two students who come to art class. Imagine my surprise when Wednesday I had 12 students! Wow!!!
They all did a great job. We painted a beautiful landscape of a gate that is out from Millwood.
The Thursday class did a fine job with the same painting too. Great job everyone.

As I promised yesterday I will share more paintings that we saw at the National Gallery on our visit there Tuesday.
This is one of my favorite paintings at the National Gallery and as many times as I have seen it I never noticed how much the little pup in the chair looks like Lincoln. This explains at lot. Lincoln must be reincarnated. He lived with a wealthy French family in the late 1800’s. That’s why he is so spoiled. 🙂

Yesterday I enjoyed a wonderful visit to the National Gallery of Art with some of my students from the Southerlands. There was 13 of us that made the trip to see the Picasso Drawings.
No photography was allowed in that exhibit but this was the entrance poster so at least you can see what it was like. The interesting thing was that there were probably about 50 pieces in the exhibit and probably half or more belonged to private collectors. Really interesting.
After we finished seeing Picasso we wandered to the newly opened gallery of impressionist paintings….some of my favorites.

Going with my artist friends and students from The Southerlands to the National Gallery of Art today to see the Picasso drawings. Take a look at more here. Since it’s opening in 1941, the National Gallery of Art has been a treasury of art and culture for the American people. Started with paintings donated by Andrew Mellon then followed by other collectors donations the NGA collection offers something for everyone.

Yesterday I discovered that an image that I had been given permission to paint in one of our kid’s classes was not the artist’s image at all. It was not original to them. Oh, they had painted it but had apparently copied another artist’s original image. Therefore it wasn’t their permission to give to the young artists to paint. Instead of accepting their word I should have spent more time checking it. I didn’t. My fault.
As soon as you create something you have copyright to it. You can’t copyright an idea but once you paint that idea, the copyright is yours. In the digital age it is increasingly difficult to protect copyright. There was a time you could ask someone for permission to paint from their image and they would either say yes or no. Now you have to ask yourself, do you trust this source? Is it their original image at all? Is the permission they are giving you really theirs to give?
I have apologized several times to the artist who created the original painting and have removed the image from my blog and destroyed the demo that I painted. I’m not sure they cared how it happened. They are just angry that it did, as they should be. But now I have learned another valuable lesson about copyright. Be extra sure you TRUST the source of the material if you are painting from someones image and not your own. And in next week’s classes we will discuss copyright again. It’s never to early to help students understand it. And I will apologize to them as well.

Spring Jed
This time of the year I take loads of photos to use as reference for my paintings. Most serious artists have tons of photos to use throughout the year as they develop paintings.
And I can’t help but take photos of my kids too. It’s hard to get them to sit still usually, especially Lincoln. But this time a bird was tweeting in the tree and he was transfixed.
