Adding a Table to an old Abstract
At class last night I decided to transform an old abstract painting into something else. You can paint right over some paints and make an entirely different creation. If the paint is especially thick you can sand it down lightly with a fine sandpaper. I am working in acrylic paints with this one that didn’t need sanding. I started with an abstract that I did back in February (you can read about it here) and started painting in a table.
Next I started thinking about where I wanted to add a vase of flowers so that I could paint in a background all around where the flowers would be. And I added a vase and started firming up the shapes of the flowers. Tonight I hope to continue putting in details that will finish it off as a “representational abstract” painting.

It’s May Day and Spring is in full bloom around town. Enjoy it. This is a great time for artists to build their reference files. I spend some time taking photos to use for paintings during this time of the year because there are so many beautiful scenes available to us. The flowers are in bloom, the colors are fresh and clean. But it doesn’t last long so get those cameras out now. Have a beautiful May Day!

I was asked about the process I use in painting one of the ball fields for my Kickstarter Project – Painted Diamonds. So I tried to take photos while I worked on the painting of the Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field to show you the progress. Sometimes I get so involved that I forget to take a picture but you get the idea.

Every artist works differently. I usually start at the top and work in the basic shapes moving toward the subject matter that is closest to the viewer at the end and then go back in to put details. That’s the great thing about painting. There is no right or wrong way as long as the end result makes you happy then you did it just right!
Wrigley is the 4th painting in the series of 30 that I am painting for my Kickstarter Project- Painted Diamonds – where I will be painting every Major League Baseball park before the World Series this year.

Fenway Park is 95% Complete
Fenway Park is 95% done. Each of these paintings is so interesting to work on. I’ve discovered things about them that I never noticed before. And with Boston I wanted to be sure to add the “B Strong” logo somewhere.

This week at Kids Class we painted the Front Royal Caboose. It was an ambitious project for an hour-long class but we did it! Marvelous! They look so good. Keep up the good work.

Fenway in the Making

Alex Sharma teaching a workshop
While I was at Hilton Head Island last week I had a chance to ride my bike down to the South Beach area. I love it there because there is a little pier and The Salty Dog Cafe is there. And of course, I love that! I was delighted to come upon a group of ladies painting in a workshop. It was led by Alex Sharma who was kind enough to allow me to take some photos. Hilton Head is a great place to paint in Plein Air. The weather is great and the scenery lovely. Here are some more scenes from Hilton Head:
