Winding Road painting complete

Winding Road painting complete

I’ve been working on a few new paintings of vineyards to hang at Winding Roads Cellars.

I finally got several together and took them out to hang last week.  You must go out and see this lovely place.

Winding Roads is a new winery located between Markham and Hume and they have a terrific product.  It’s a beautiful ride out there too.  They are open Thursday – Monday.

And of course, while you are there please check out my new art.  This is one of the new paintings and it is of the view from the winery’s back deck overlooking the little pond on their property.

This painting is SOLD!

wpid-CAM01476.jpgSeveral weeks ago I blogged about painting on location with a group of artists to help with a fundraiser for Blue Ridge Hospice.  Read about it here.  The Winchester Show House and Gardens opens this Saturday and I hope you will plan to see it.  The photos in the article in The Northern Virginia Daily and on their website does not do the house justice.  Go see it.  It will be a wonderful outing and you will be helping a very good cause.  Thanks!  Here’s the article:  http://www.nvdaily.com/news/2013/09/winchester-showhouse-and-gardens-fundraiser-honors-headley-homes-history.php

Stolen Delacroix

Stolen Delacroix

41 years ago today the largest art heist in Canadian history took place including this Delacroix.  Armed thieves made off with $2 million (approximately $11 million in today’s dollars) in art from the Montreal Museum of Fine Art including works by Rembrandt, Corot, and Gainsborough.  The three thieves set off an alarm or they would have made off with even more art.  No one has ever been arrested for the crime.    You can read more about it here.

When I read stories like this I always wonder where is all that art???  Is someone enjoying it somewhere or is it stuck in a storage unit???  What a shame.

My Donkey at Stage 2 in the Workshop

My Donkey at Stage 2 in the Workshop

I think the best thing an artist can do for themselves is to study artists whose art they admire.  Taking a workshop or class if it is available is a great way to hone skills and develop as an artist.

This weekend I got to do that with a wonderful animal artist, Nancy Bass.  Nancy’s art is beautifully expressive and has layer upon layer of color that makes the animal jump off the canvas.  You can see her captivating work here on her website.

Each day of the workshop Nancy demonstrated her unique process with the eleven artists in the class and then helped us individually as we attempted her technique.  Nancy works in layers so we had to work a drawing and under-painting the first day of the workshop.  Then the second day she showed us how she begins laying paint onto the subject and explained that she sometimes lets it dry and layers 4 or 5 times.  It is a process of patience.

It was an intensive weekend of painting…..and concentrating….and developing into better artists.  It was interesting to see the style and work of each artist in attendance and getting to know some new artist friends from around the state.

Thanks Nancy for sharing your talent with us!

Nancy Bass, a wonderful animal artist, is teaching a two-day workshop at The Beverley Street Art School in Staunton.  Her technique is so different than the way I normally paint that it has been a real challenge.  This is part of a demonstration that Nancy did for us.

Animals Llama 5 Animals Llama 2 Animals Llama 8 Animals Llama 10There are very few days that I don’t actually paint.  Yesterday was one of them.  I spent the afternoon riding around the county taking photos of animals for an upcoming workshop that I will be attending on “Painting Animals”.  I’m very excited to be taking the workshop.  It’s my birthday do-over since I was sick on my birthday this year.  A good do-over, huh?!

These are some of the photos that I got yesterday.  A good friend was kind enough to let me come to his place and get some Llama shots.  I have been wanting to paint one so here is my chance.  Just look at that FACE!!!

Dickey Ridge Plein Air 3

One of Kelly’s paintings at Dickey Ridge Overlook in the Shenandoah National Park

I am very excited to share with you today that I have recently joined a wonderful group  called “Paint the Parks“.  Their mission as artists is to paint scenes from our wonderful parks all over the world and share them with collectors.

As their website states, ” The idea of Paint The Parks is to visit protected park lands and paint them ~ in your home area and all around the world. What is a “Park?” Any nature reserve set aside for conservation and public use qualifies as a “Park.” We want to preserve these precious places for future generations.  Artists can paint the parks en Plein Air (on site), or in the studio. But only list the paintings of places you have actually visited. There is no substitute for experiencing the majesty of the out of doors, and being in nature’s temple. The energy and soul of a place has a visceral effect on your entire being.”

When a painting is purchased a percentage of the sale goes to a park foundation.  I am very pleased to be a new part of this movement.  I hope you will take a minute to visit their website and see what Karin Leonard, the artist with a vision to help save our beautiful parks, is doing through this project.

I have added a Paint the Parks page to my website that I will dedicate to park paintings so it will be easy to go to one place to see them all.  I have many more paintings to add to the page and will get them all listed soon.  Thanks for looking and for anything you can do to help preserve park space.
