Dr BarnesA couple of years ago I posted about a trip to Philadelphia where a group of us went to see the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Barnes Foundation.  (You can read about it here and here.)  Dr. Barnes was a fascinating person and his art collection is amazing.  You need to see it if you haven’t already.  I can’t wait to see it again.

We are going to Philly on a day trip on Sunday, March 8th.  We will leave Front Royal via Motor Coach at 8:30 and return late Sunday evening.  You have two options on this trip.  You can spend the afternoon at The Barnes or you can go see the Philadelphia Flower Show.  If you are interested in going you can get all the contact information here ( FINAL Barnes Foundation) .  Consider making a day trip with us.  It will be worth it.

Punched-MonetThe man who  punched a hole through Claude Monet’s “Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat (1874) worth $10 million, Andrew Shannon,  has been sentenced to five years in prison and banned from going to galleries upon his release.

The attack took place at the National Gallery of Ireland, in Dublin, in June 2012, where Shannon attacked a Monet painting.  He claimed he fainted.  Yeah, right!  Read more about this nut here.

The good news is that the painting has been restored and returned to display.  Read how here.

Andrew Wyeth

Andrew Wyeth

I spent a delightful afternoon leading a tour group from The Village at Orchard Ridge to the National Gallery of Art in DC yesterday.  We made the trip to see the wonderful Andrew Wyeth exhibit, “Looking Out- Looking In”.  The exhibit closes the end of November and if you haven’t seen it yet you MUST go take a look.  Amazing watercolors with a limited palette.  Wonderful!

We had some time to see a lot more art and I will share more with you this week.  Here are two we saw in the Impressionist Galleries by Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec.  Of course, they caught my eye because they had pups in them.  🙂

Paladin at Flint Hill Public House

Paladin at Flint Hill Public House

I recently was treated to lunch at Flint Hill Public House during my “birthday month celebration”.  (Thanks Jennifer.) While there I got to see up close the public art sculpture they have on display out front – Paladin.

This is an impressive work of art in steel and recycled auto parts.  It was relocated to it’s current location from the former LBJ Ranch in Texas. You can learn more about it and see other photos of it by clicking here.

And if you are in the area be sure to stop in.  The food is excellent and the art is too!

Big Meadow-Shenandoah National Park

The “Celebrating Wilderness Through Art” Seminar that I attended yesterday was delightful!

The group of about 25 met at Byrd Visitor Center (milepost 51) and were warmly welcomed by the staff of Shenandoah National Park as well as by our seminar leaders Betty Gatewood and Phyllis Northup.

We were given an overview of the Wilderness Act which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary.  The seminar was offered as part of that celebration.

The focus of the day was on the “How and Why of Journaling Nature”.  The leaders did an excellent job in such a short time to focus on seeing and sketching as well as recording what we see, feel, hear and smell as we view nature.

We spent time sketching out in the middle of Big Meadows, recording colors and sights.

Hiking to the location to sketch gave us the opportunity to see small bits of nature that we sometime forget to slow down and take in.

Sketching is a wonderful way to slow down and see!

I am excited today to be rounding out my birthday week at a special treat – I am going to participate in a workshop in Shenandoah National Park called “Celebrating Wilderness Through Art”.    I am sure it is going to be a wonderful day filled with learning, nature and good friends.

I’ll take loads of photos to share and hopefully to paint.  A couple of years ago I was accepted into the “Paint the Parks” artist group.  (Read more here.)   I need to paint some more wonderful paintings of our beautiful park soon to post with this group and hopefully sell to help them.  🙂

The second painting I did at the Nimrod Art weekend was a small paint and paper piece of a radish.  Working with paper collage is so different from just painting.  I am glad to get the opportunity to experience it with such a wonderful instructor.

Susannah Raine-Haddad was extremely generous in her teaching.   You can learn more about her and her work on her website ZouZou’s Basement.

One of her wonderful collage pieces made the cover of Cloth-Paper-Scissors magazine earlier this year.

Thanks Susannah for sharing your skill and knowledge with us.  It was great fun!
