Art Walk 1The Art Walk last night was great!  It’s the first time since we started over a year ago that I have actually been able to get away from the shop (Delilah’s) and see what the other artists and shops are doing.  And boy was it fun.

The Blue Ridge Arts Council Gallery had a good turn out of people looking at the Member Show when I stopped by there.  That show runs till the first part of August and is my favorite each year.  I love seeing what everyone has been working on.  www.blueridgearts.org

Art Walk 2And I love how people really get into describing what they like about paintings to their friends.

Art Walk 3Some artists were set up on the street even though it was a very HOT evening…

Art Walk 4And some really smart artists, like Michelle, were set up inside in an air conditioned shop painting beautiful works of art.  (You know I am especially fond of dogs so I loved this one!)

Art Walk 5And we even had a group of ladies from Winchester who were making one of a kind greeting cards that were just lovely.

I didn’t get photos of all the artists that were working last night at the art walk.  There were many more so you will need to mark your calendar for the 3rd Thursday in August (August 20th) and come downtown and see for yourself.

It is so nice to have an ongoing art event like this in Front Royal.  Good job everybody!

Weeping Cherry at the Train Station Completed

Today’s painting is one I did a few months ago during a 3rd Thursday Art Walk.  I started it that night and completed it over the next few days.   It is called “Weeping Cherry Tree at the Train Station” and it is on display at the Blue Ridge Arts Council as part of the Member Show.

Skunk Remedy

There was the strong smell of skunk in my backyard.  And that can only mean one thing…TROUBLE!  Have you ever  had a dog get sprayed by a skunk?  Well, I did and I can tell you it is not pleasant.

Jeffie - April 27-3Jeffie, who was the sweeting little guy that ever lived, jumped the back fence at our yard at the house  and caught a skunk in his mouth.

YUCK!

And I tried all the old standbys that we used when I was a kid…namely washing him in tomato juice.  It didn’t phase the stink.

So since we have everything at our fingertips with computers anymore, I searched for a skunk remedy.  And here is what I found:

Mix together 1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide (3%), 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap (like dishwashing soap).  Spread over the dog and leave for 5 – 10 minutes.  Rinse with water.

And it really works!  Or it did for Jeffie.  The only problem was that because Jeffie caught the skunk in his mouth, everytime he opened his mouth for the next 6 months the smell of skunk came out.  Poor baby.

Ps.  And yes, Jeffie was also a lab-basset mix and Jed looks very much like him.

Front Royal is the Canoe Capital of Virginia and they are holding a river festival on August 15th.  In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the town being named Canoe Capital they are asking artists to participate in a paddle art display.  I just completed my entry:

Paddle 1Here’s the start.  I covered the entire paddle with acrylic paint making it look like a scene from the river with the sky above.

Paddle 2Next I sketched in the details that I wanted to paint on the paddle and started painting them in.

Paddle 3Paddle 4This is the finished detail of the paddle with the “Boys” on the front and Canoe Capital on the back.

A special thank you to our friend Kym who came up with the name for this one – “Dog Paddle!”

Paddle 5Paddle 6The completed paddle and, of course, everyone’s a critic!

The paddles will be on display at shops in downtown and then featured in the  Blue Ridge Arts Council’s “Art in the Window Gallery” on Main Street in Front Royal from July 22 – August 21.

You can learn more about the festival by clicking on the events tab of www.canoecapital.org .

Happy Birthday Jed!

!st day home 2Jed came to live with us on January 5th of this year.  He was found as a stray in St. Clairsville, OH and was at the shelter there.  We found him on Petfinder, a wonderful website that helps thousands of pets find homes each year.

We had just lost our beloved Rosie in December and I thought Truman would like having a friend around.  Little did I know that Truman was lobbying to be an only dog !

Jed & Tru

He and Jed did NOT hit it off right away and while Truman still bosses Jed around, they get along a little better now.

When Jed arrived in Virginia, you would have thought that he had lived in our home his entire life.  He just settled right in…especially into the window seats in the living room and bedroom.  He took those over as his.

Our dogs names have a presidential theme but I didn’t want to change his name again so we bent the name rule with Jed to include fictional presidents.  He is named for Jed Bartlett from The West Wing, a wonderful tv series.

Jed sleeps in chair 1The vet estimated that he was about 1 1/2 years old when I got him so we decided that his birthday would be in July.  Since I was also born in July and to make the celebration especially fun for both of us, it came to be that Jed has the same birthday that I do.

So Happy Birthday to us, Little Man.  I am so happy that you have made your forever home with us.

And remember, when you party too hard this is what you look like at the end of the day!

Morning Walk in WV 1One of the things I love about going over to the cabin in West Virginia is the beautiful views that we have on that gorgeous old apple orchard.  This weekend I took the “boys” up to the top of the mountain and we walked each morning by the apple trees.  On the first morning though, this was the view….a blanket of fog hanging in the valley with a bright sun ready to burn it off.

Morning Walk in WV 4There wasn’t one bad vista…everywhere I looked there was beauty.  The mountains peeking up on the far mountain range; the heavy fog like marshmellow creme; and the green, lush trees heavy with apples were all there for us to take in.

Morning Walk in WV 5Morning Walk in WV 6But this is mostly what I see when I walk.  Jed leading the way out in front….

And Truman not too very far behind not wanting to miss any of the scents of rabbits, groundhogs, and deer and who knows what all else.

And watching the “boys” running and having such fun is just as beautiful as the views to me.

Squash

SquashA friend of mine plants the most beautiful vegetable garden every year down by the river.  And his generosity is enjoyed by so many of his friends.  Often in the summer I will find a bucket of delicious veggies on my front stoop.  Today it was yellow crookneck squash (Joe knows this is my favorite) and cucumbers.  What a treat!

I stewed them up with some fresh green onions that I got at the farmer’s market and a little butter, salt, and pepper.  Now summer has arrived!   Thanks Joe.

One of the questions I get asked most as a daily painter is how do you find something to paint everyday.  And the answer is fairly easy.  I live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and am lucky enough to have a little cabin in the mountains of West Virginia on an old apple orchard so I see things everyday that I want to paint.  And I never walk out the door without my camera. (Well, sometimes I forget and then I see something I need a photo of and I have to beat myself up for a while which is never any fun!)

Across the Bridge

This is a view we see almost everyday as we come across the Shenandoah River into our town.  I snapped this while driving along (don’t tell Allen) so it’s not the clearest photo ever but it will work fine as a reference photo.

Road 3

And Truman, Jed and I drive down miles of roads all over the old apple orchard in search of great views.

And Jed and Truman are both experts at sniffing out a great location to set up and paint!

Old Truck 2

And sometimes when you least expect it you drive around a bend in the road and there it is, serendipity!  The thing you least expect to see but can’t wait to take photos of so you can preserve it to paint later.  Or maybe because you just can’t believe your eyes…..

You have just got to love summertime.  There is no other time of the year when “Farmer’s Markets” open in small town and you can run down on Saturday morning and pick up fresh produce.

Farmers Mkt 1

Just look at these peaches!  Yummy.

Farmers Mkt 2

And have you ever seen cauliflower like this?    I was amazed to see the color purple in this veggie.  Really?  Is this what we are doing with our vegetables these days to make them interesting to eat?

Farmers Mkt 3

And all good markets have beets and basil, don’t they?

Farmers Mkt 4

Just going to the market can give you so many ideas of ways to shake up a dull diet.  Not to mention great reference photos for painting if you are an artist.  🙂  If you don’t know where there is a little farmer’s market near you, try to find one.  It’s entertaining, enlightening, not to mention helpful to the farmers trying to make ends meet.
