Painting the Deck

Occasionally I paint things other than canvas.

Yesterday I painted (stained) the deck.  It’s a BIG deck.  I started at 7 a.m. and had it trimmed out in an hour.  Then reinforcements arrived.  Allen agreed to help.  He doesn’t like to paint but he was great help.  And with the two of us rolling it we were finished in another hour or so.

The hardest part was keeping the dogs inside.

If you look closely at the photo of the throw run you can see that Lincoln ran out and pick up some paint on his paws and then ran right back into the house to put little paw prints everywhere.

I think it turned out great but of course, it had to be inspected by Jed and Lincoln.  I think they approved.

The first fence post in the Warren County Dog Park went up last week.  And the building continues.  Woo Hoo!

It shouldn’t take long to get it finished now that we have begun so we can expect the park to open this summer.  Yeah!  Woof!

If you are in the Front Royal, Virginia area today you want to be sure to come downtown for the Wine Festival.  It’s a huge festival that takes up Main and Chester Streets with wonderful vendors and wineries not  to mention specials at the stores along the streets.

Stop by Delilah’s at 105 E. Main where everything is on sale today.  We will also be having a tent sale out front and there will be artists demonstrating their work there most of the day.  Stop in and say hello.

These are the poppies that I painted last night at the Warren Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Denim and Diamonds event.  There was a wonderful crowd of women there exploring the different vendors with information on women’s health and well-being.  I had a great time seeing so many friends.

Poppies for Charity, acrylic on 12″x12″ canvas.  I donated this piece to the raffle.  I hope whoever won it likes how it turned out!

I was invited to teach this year’s Adult Leadership Class a lesson in art.  Leadership is an excellent program that the Chamber of Commerce offers that studies a different aspect of our community each month.  They study in-depth government, education, industry, tourism, law enforcement, art, and much more over the course of the year.

So, of course, for my session on Art, Culture and Tourism day, we all painted.

And everyone embraced their inner artist!

And at the end of our session we had seven new artists!  Great job everyone.

Work Begins…

I rode down to Eastham Park yesterday to take a look at what was going on.  The closest space to the parking lot is being graded.  That is where they are putting some soccer fields for the kids.  I didn’t see anything further back where the dog park is going to be yet but I didn’t have time to walk all the way back.  But this is definitely a good sign.  Work had begun.  Woo Hoo!

One of the things I like best about working at the shop is that I meet really interesting people who are visiting our town.  Last weekend I met these nice folks who were in town for the week for Spring Break.  They were staying out at the State Park and doing fun things each day.  I invited them to come paint with us if they had time.

Annabelle joined the extra-large class that we had on Wednesday.  See more here.   They did a great job painting and had fun too.  So nice to meet you Lori and Annabelle.

I’m thrilled to have my work in Strasburg, VA, at Buggy B’s, a great little shop with furniture, flowers, and finishings!  It’s at 239 E. King Street.  Stop in next time you are in Strasburg or better yet, make a trip over to see the store.  It’s worth the trip.

You can see part of my “Big Fruit” series in one photo right above the wine.  Did I mention they have wine?!  🙂

Every year the Blue Ridge Arts Council holds a fundraiser called “Deck the Halls”.  Many people chip in by decorating trees and wreaths and donate them to be sold for the benefit of arts programing in our community.  The event is this evening with the sale beginning at 7 pm.

This tree called “Bark for the Park” was decorated by my friend Linda Kusior who took my Bark for the Park posters and turned them into ornaments.  Isn’t it cute?!  Thanks Linda.

I painted this Santa Bowl that I donated for sale.

This snowman chair was my other donation to the fundraiser.  I hope that these items sell well to benefit BRAC.

You really should take the time to attend.  Not only will it put you in the holiday spirit but you will see so many great ideas.  Creativity abounds at this event.  Just take a look at this adorable “Snowgirl” tree.  She has on a little tutu skirt and is holding her shoes in one hand and her purse in the other as she tiptoes thru the snow.  I love her.

Be sure to stop by.  You don’t want to miss all these wonderful ideas.  See, here is even more….

Having just returned from the Art of the Carolinas Trade Show hosted by Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh, NC I am more convinced than ever that even though it is a struggle to make a living as an artist, it matters.  Art matters for so many reasons.  It matters when I have the opportunity to work with young people, like these Warren County Middle School students, when I can help them discover their creativity.

It matters when I work with artists ages 7 – 85 to help them discover how art can inspire them, how it can help develop communication, how it enlivens our senses, how it increases our self-confidence, how it enhances our ability to learn and fuels our imaginations.  Art matters!

But it needs people who appreciate and support local art and artists to sustain it.  Support local art in your community because art matters for so many reasons.
