Thurs Kids Caboose

This week at Kids Class we painted the Front Royal Caboose.  It was an ambitious project for an hour-long class but we did it!  Marvelous!  They look so good.  Keep up the good work.

Mama 9A few weeks ago I was invited to be  the “Grand Marshall” in today’s Bark for Life Walk.  I was honored to say yes especially since the date coincided with a special date for my family.  Eighteen years ago today we lost our mother to cancer.  Her name was Barbara Chancey Walker and she was a wonderful person and mom.  We miss her everyday.  So today Mamie and I will walk in the Bark Walk to raise money for cancer research and while we do we will be thinking of Mama.

Come out and join us at Eastham Park (the parking lot to the Dog Park) for the walk and other events starting at 10.  Registration is at 9:30 a.m.  Hope to see you there.

Anniv Painting reworkedIn 2011 I taught an artist residency with kids at all five elementary schools to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Warren County.  We painted a large painting that each school now hangs for everyone to see.  Read more about that project here and here.)  For that project  I painted a sample painting for the kids to see what it was that they would be producing during our time together.  In the upper left corner of each painting that the school kids produced they painted their school.

I decided to  paint out the school and paint the Government Center on the sample painting and then donate it to hang at the Center.  Here is the completed painting.  I am meeting Brandy at the Center this morning to hang the painting and I am very happy that they want to hang it right away.  I’ll try to have some photos to share soon.

Snow Dog

Snow Dog

Mamie with Snow Dog

Mamie with Snow Dog

Well, we got a total of 15 inches of snow at our house yesterday.  They were calling for 12-24 inches so I consider us lucky! They were so certain it would be a great deal of snow that we had both The Weather Channel and The Today Show’s Al Roker broadcasting from our little town of Front Royal, VA.  Jed's asking, "Who's in there?"

SAMSUNG SAMSUNGOver the past few months while walking the dogs down the path at Eastham Park to get to the dog park we have noticed several trees along the river that were down.  A month or so ago while Allen was walking with me he said it looked like a beaver had been working.  So yesterday I took a couple of photos of their handiwork. Beavers are the second largest rodent in the world but they sure look a lot cuter than rats!  They build lodges and apparently that is what they are doing at the river.  Beavers are herbivores preferring the wood of  cottonwood, alder, birch, maple, and also pondweed and waterlilies.  There used to be many more beavers but having been trapped for their fur numbers are down from a high of some 60 million to around 12 million.  (More on beavers here.) SAMSUNG So far we haven’t actually seen a beaver but we look every day and maybe we will see one soon.  In the meantime we have to be happy to just see their handiwork.  This is one of the things I love about walking down to the dog park.  You never know what you may see down by the river.SAMSUNG

We went to a wonderful art festival yesterday that celebrated the Peace River in Arcadia, Florida. And while we saw many really nice paintings what caught my eye was the vendors set up outside with the community vendors. One was promoting their wildlife farm where you could see alligators. This little guy was their ambassador.

There was also a vendor who featured skunks! That’s right, you heard me-skunks! And it was a rescue group that was looking to rehome the little stinkers as pets. Anyone want me to bring one back for you?

Our Flag

From Art Camp 2011

From Art Camp 2011

We celebrate our flag and our country today as the Inaugural Festivities take place in Washington. This piece of art is a mixed media piece that we did in art camp a couple of years ago.  The kids did a great job with paint and paper making these wonderful flags – an emblem to celebrate. We’ve painted flags several time with Kids Class.  Check out Olivia here with her painting of flags.    And check out more flag art from my students by clicking here.

I was asked to speak and do a demonstration painting for the Front Royal Christian Women’s Connection at Shenandoah Country Club last week.  Their theme for the month was “Anyone Can Paint”.  And I was thrilled they invited me to share.  I had 15 minutes to do this little painting and to talk about how I got started painting.  As you know I am always telling people that all they need to paint is desire.  I really think anyone who is interested in painting can do it.  And that is why I love teaching and helping people develop their desire to paint.  If you’d like to try it contact kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com for more info or check it out here.
