Speaking to Girl Scouts about art

Speaking to Girl Scouts about art

CAM07245Yesterday I was asked to speak to a group of Girl Scouts about being a full-time artist.  They were a great group of girls who toured the Blue Ridge Arts Council before our session and had several questions about art.  I was working on the demonstration painting for our 1st Saturday Paint Party so they watched as I completed the flowers.  They enjoyed it so much that they want to come back and do a little painting.  So we will meet again later in the month!

I did finish the demo painting for this Saturday’s Paint Party and there are still a couple of seats open if you want to join us and paint this little geranium painting.  Contact me today.

CAM05894CAM05881Some days it’s about the snow.  The last several days there has been snow on the ground and frigid cold weather.  Yesterday the thermometer said 1 degree when I got up.  This morning it’s 7!  We often experience cold weather here in Virginia in the winter time but not cold like this.  It makes it difficult to do anything outside.  But I ventured out to take a few snow photos for reference.  Here are a couple from downtown.

Stay safe and warm.

CAM05048On our morning walk along the river path to the Dog Park my “kids” and I noticed something different.  We go almost every day so if something is “out-of-place” we notice it.  This was a box on a post.  Turns out it is a small library built by a boy scout in our community as an Eagle Scout project. He built five and placed them in different parks around our town.  You can take a book to read and replace it with one you have finished.  Great Idea!  And Great Project!

Constitution

Today, and every day, we should thank our veterans for the sacrifices they have made to keep us free.  Most of us have family members or loved ones who have given service to one of the military branches.  Brother is retired from the Army.  He served as an aviator during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  I am proud of his service.

Since I was 16 years old I have carried a copy of the U.S. Constitution in my purse. (I am on my 4th copy as they get worn and fall apart after the wear and tear of 10 or 15 years.)   I carry it for several reasons:  1)  I like to read it.  I don’t think enough people have and 2) it ends many arguments when people start quoting the Constitution and are positive they are correct in their opinion.

I am grateful to every veteran who has served who has made it possible for me to carry this all these years.

Buggy B's 2

Kelly and Diane

Buggy B's Last night Buggy B’s, a wonderful little gift shop on King Street in Strasburg, VA, hosted an artist reception for the artist they represent.  If you haven’t been to Buggy B’s you should stop by to see them.  They have a beautiful gift selection as well as local arts and crafts.  And their resident florist, Barbara Plitt, makes beautiful arrangements with fresh or silk flowers.

It was a nice event and even gave the artists time to get to know each other better.  I enjoyed talking with Diane Furlong, a terrific pastel artist from Strasburg.  You can see her work here.

Bing Crosby Stadium Front Royal, Virginia

Bing Crosby Stadium
Front Royal, Virginia

I couldn’t paint all those ball parks over the last six months and not include our very own “Bing Crosby Stadium”.  So number 31 in my series of Painted DIamonds is The Bing, as it is affectionately known in Front Royal.  It opened in April of 1950 and is the home to the Front Royal Cardinals, a collegiate summer baseball team.

There are many variations to the story of how the stadium got its name.  Here is one:

In 1948, while serving as Grand Marshall of the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Bing Crosby came to Front Royal at the invitation of Senator Raymond R. Guest to help with a fund-raising campaign for a new ball park. He contributed $1,000 to the effort. In 1950, Mr. Crosby returned to Front Royal for the premiere of his movie, “Riding High”, and made another contribution of $3,572.92, which completed the fund-raising campaign.

A plaque at the stadium reads as follows:  “The stadium was dedicated on April 1, 1950.  It was erected by the people of Front Royal and Warren County in sincere appreciation of Bing Crosby’s assistance in promoting recreational facilities for the youth of this community. “
