loving-vincent-shop-1398331843If you do nothing else today you HAVE to watch this film trailer.   I’ve been seeing a short video on Facebook the last few days promoting a new film about Vincent Van Gogh.  It  is and animated film about his life being made entirely using paintings in his swirling-choppy style and based on his letters.  It is AMAZING!

You  must watch this short video about the film…..and then watch the trailer for the film here.  The things they can do with art and film is unbelievable.  I can’t wait to see the completed film.

Happy Birthday Renoir

artist-pierre-auguste-renoir-painting-with-brush-tied-to-his-arthritic-hand-last-days-of-his-life

Renoir Self-PortraitRenoir self-portrait-1875I missed wishing Renoir a Happy Birthday yesterday.  We shouldn’t let the day pass without recognizing his wonderful talent.  “Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Viene, France, the child of a working-class family. As a boy, he worked in a porcelain factory where his drawing talents led to his being chosen to paint designs on fine china. Before he enrolled in art school, he also painted hangings for overseas missionaries and decorations on fans. During those early years, he often visited the Louvre to study the French master painters.”  Read more about Renoir here.

What strikes me most now about Renoir is all that I have read about his late life when he developed rheumatoid arthritis but continued to work by strapping brushes to his hands when he could no longer hold them.  Amazing!

Here are three pictures of Renoir.  A photograph taken near the end of his life.  The others are two self-portraits (selfies!)..one from 1875 and the other in 1899.

de Kooning, Interchanged

“Billionaire Ken Griffin paid about $500 million for two paintings by Abstract Expressionist masters in one of the largest private art deals ever, according to people familiar with the transaction.

Griffin bought de Kooning’s 1955 oil on canvas titled “Interchanged” — also known as “Interchange” — for about $300 million and Pollock’s 1948 “Number 17A” canvas for about $200 million, one of the people said. The de Kooning fetched $20.7 million in 1989, then an auction record for the artist and more than three times the highest pre-sale estimate of $6 million, according to Artnet, which tracks auction prices. Pollock’s work was featured in a 1949 Life magazine article that helped make him a household name.”  Read more of this Bloomberg Business Article here.

Big Mama

Big Mama

Every year I take the time to mark a few days on my calendar.  These are special days to people who made a huge impact in my life.  Big Mama is one of these.  Today would have been her birthday.  She was born in 1908 and lived through such an amazing time.  She taught me so much about crocheting and cooking.  I am grateful for all the time I had with her.  Happy Birthday Big Mama.  You are missed.

(I have written about her many times over the years.  You can read  more about her here and see more photos. And just put Big Mama in the search box and you will find LOTS of good recipes!)

Sargent-with-Madame-xA very interesting article on how Madame X by John Singer Sargent came to be at the Metropolitan Museum of Art one  hundred years ago.

It also points out the “scandal” surrounding the painting.  Amazing!  Click here to read the article and see other amazing photos of Madame X-the final painting and the original.

Tablecloth 2 CrochetMy friend and fellow artist, Sandra Charles, shared this article with me yesterday.  (You’ll remember Sandra as the one who made the “Cussing Jacket” and the Garden Princess with me.)

The article points out the hot new trend is not going out partying at bars with your friends but rather going out with friends to places like The Studio to learn something new inspired by our Grandparents – Granspiration!  I LOVE IT!  You have known me to talk about how my grandmothers taught me to crochet, to cook, to embroidery and more.  Did I mention that I Love This???!!!!

You can read more about how Jed got his name here.  And read even more about his story here.  You can see many, many photos of Sweet Jed here.

We love you Jed.  Thanks for being our good boy.  Happy Adoption Day!

At the end of each year WordPress provides a review of statistics.  Here is the 2015 one.  For comparison here is the review from 2014.

Here’s an excerpt:

Madison Square Garden can seat 20,000 people for a concert. This blog was viewed about 64,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Madison Square Garden, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
