Sleeping Jakes new bed Sleeping JakeA few months ago, my friend Jen posted a picture of her sweet boy Jake with his new bed.  I just loved it so I asked if I could paint it.  Here is my  version along with the original photo. The painting is acrylic on 12″x12″ canvas.  I love working with unusual angles  and compositions like this.  I have painted Jake before with his sister Juneau.  You can see that by clicking here.  Thanks Jen for giving me such sweet subject matter to work with this week.  (And this painting has sold!  Yeah!)

Mamie with Snow Dog

Mamie with Snow Dog

Well, we got a total of 15 inches of snow at our house yesterday.  They were calling for 12-24 inches so I consider us lucky! They were so certain it would be a great deal of snow that we had both The Weather Channel and The Today Show’s Al Roker broadcasting from our little town of Front Royal, VA.  Jed's asking, "Who's in there?"

Dog Portraits on Wall I just completed a portrait of Mamie to hang on the portrait wall with the paintings of other dogs that have lived at this house with me.  Clockwise from top left you will see Eleanor Roosevelt (Rosie), Truman, Jefferson, Lincoln, Boo, and Jed Bartlett.  Now Mamie Eisenhower can be added to the wall.

Jeffie EnhancedFour years ago this past week (January 5th) we made the cold trek (it was during a snow storm) to get our Jed.  He’s the sweetest boy.  So Happy Adoption Day Jed.  We’re so glad we are your people!

Many of you know that I name my dogs using a presidential theme.  Jed was my first exception to the rule.  He is named for the fictional president, Jed Bartlett from the West Wing.  We loved that show and since he was already being called Jed and answered to it well we just went with it.

Read and see more about Jed here and see a step by step painting of Jed here!  Way to go Jedder Bean!  We love you big boy.

MeMaw, oil on canvas, 6″x6″.

This is MeMaw.  She showed up at Allen’s warehouse about 3 years ago with three little yellow kittens.  She was tiny and thin and, of course, Allen took them in and started feeding her and eventually the three boys as they got bigger.  They were wild but he spent time working with them and now they all are tame with him.  They have a good life at the warehouse with Allen.  This little painting was Allen’s birthday present. (You can see Bob, one of the yellow kittens all grown up here.)

Living with art that you love is a joy.  Most people buy art that speaks to them in some way whether it’s colors or shapes or subject matter.  Painters may approach it in a little different way.  I know that I often purchase art from artists I admire and then I hang it so that I can see it every day and enjoy learning from it.

I also collected art of dogs -SURPRISE!  And in my living room I have a wall that holds portraits of the dogs who have lived in this house with me.  You can see them in this photo – Rosie, Truman, Jed, Jeffie, Boo and Lincoln.

Last week I posted some photos of my art students painting their version of Stinkin’ Lincoln.  See it here.

And I promised to complete my demo piece which I did this week.  Here is the final version of mine that is now hanging on the wall with all my other dog paintings.  We just love that little furry face!

Several months ago some friends who do wonderful work with German Shepherd Rescue stopped by Delilah’s with their latest rescue.  She doesn’t look at all like a German Shepherd!

This little Gem is the cutest thing.  She was bashful on her first visit but let me snap this photo.  I couldn’t resist painting it.

She came back to visit a few weeks ago and has grown a little and is more outgoing and a little less skittish.  And she is definitely a daddy loving girl.  Her dad has salt and pepper hair and a beard so they even look a little alike.

A Little Gem, acrylic on canvas, 16″x12″, available at Delilah’s or by contacting kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com .
