It ‘s Christmas time.  The family is all gathered together.  The gifts are beginning to be passed around.  And you see it…there it is…. right there… all wrapped up…a gift from Grandma or Papa or Aunt Noreen or Cousin Virgil.  You know exactly what it is before you open it.  It’s a handmade something  ________ (you insert the item here….a knitted hat, a crocheted scarf, a painting, a bowl cozy, a quilt, a vest, a pottery mug, etc.) They always “make” you something for Christmas.  Well, this year when you open that handmade gift hope you will think of this.

You should consider yourself extremely special and loved….and here is why.

First, making the gift requires much consideration and thought to choose just the right project and design for you.  The giver wants it to be something special that is specific just for you.  Often this takes hours of research and thought to find the right design and colors.  A handmade gift is NOT an afterthought.

Next, the materials must be assembled.  Sometimes they are easily found but other projects like quilts require that the designs are drawn, yardage is figured and fabric is ordered and purchased. Again, this can take many hours and quite a bit of expense.  Based on the size of the quilt a conservative estimate of the supplies alone is at least $125.

Then the actual project begins to be made. Depending on what the object is this could take a few hours to several weeks. What you need to know and remember is that the giver is willing to give up this much of their life for you….to make something special for you! And while they are making it they are often thinking of you and the fun times you have had together. Again, in the case of a quilt a conservative estimate for an small quilt is 25-30 hours.

So when you consider the time plus the cost of supplies that goes into a handmade gift you begin to see the real value.  It would be so much easier for the giver to go online to Amazon or Walmart and order a cheaply made object that would cost less in money and time.  But because they obviously love and care for you they gave you their time and made you something that is one of a kind…just like you!

So this holiday season when you receive a special handmade gift from your creative family and friends whether it’s a quilted banner, knitted mittens or crocheted sweater or scarf or a painting, a table runner, a wooden bowl, a pottery mug, etc. be grateful to the person who cares enough for you to give you hours of their time and thought to make something special just for you!  Be grateful for something handmade!

Merry “Handmade” Christmas!

Last year I posted about finally finding the last Featherweight that I had been searching for in order to have one of each color. Read about that here. And with that I thought I was finished collecting these wonderful little machines. But as it turns out I needed one more…..The Centennial! These machines have a special badge that marks a hundred years of sewing for Singer….1851-1951. Not too long ago I had a chance to buy one…and you guessed it, I did! Here she is! And she is beautiful. I took her down to the river earlier this week to sew with her. She did a great job. I realized as I was sewing that I had now shared her yet here so I wanted to show her off as well as the Featherweight Table that I bought not too long ago at an auction thanks to the sharp eye of my friend, Jackie, who picked it up for me.

If you read the blog link above you saw that people who collect Featherweights name them. My first three are named Barbara for my mom and Lucille and Nola Mae for my grandmothers. The three of them taught me so much about sewing, crafting and creating. I am forever in their debt for that. So as I thought about what to name the Centennial just one name came to mind….June. I am naming her for June Winn Thomas who was my Home Ec teacher in high school and a great friend. Even after all these years she still cheers me on commenting on what all we are doing at The Studio. So meet June…the newest addition to my Featherweight collection. I would say I am done buying these little machines but never say never.

Plantation Office 1A couple of weeks ago I told you about the invitation participate in an upcoming show at Belle Grove.  (Read about that here.)  As the space we are showing, a historic home, offers some challenges for “showing” the work I have started painting some small pieces that will be easily placed on easels or placed on mantel pieces. Yesterday I started a few.  Here’s one I’m working on now of the Plantation Office which is one of the rooms where my art will be shown.  More to come…..

I’m excited to announce that I have been invited to show my art at Belle Grove this June along with two other regional artists. We visited the house yesterday to meet and discuss the show.  It’s the first time they are going to display local art throughout the house.  I’m so excited.

This beautiful old home is a terrific place to show art and for people to see a wonderful example of a manor house.  We will keep you updated on all the details as we get closer to the show on June 22-24, 2018.  There will be an “Meet the Artists” Reception on June 23rd as well as classes and workshops on June 23rd and 24th.  It will be a great time to visit Belle Grove.

I paint many demonstration paintings as I teach and most of the time I don’t go back and finish them up because I don’t usually have time before I am on to something else.  But occasionally I will go in and tighten up one or two so that they are a little more complete.  Here are a few that I did add a little more to recently.  You can see the original posts for these paintings here:  Still Life,  Sailboat Landscape, and Tulips.

BDS Spot Lamp

Spot Lamp

I was asked why we stopped in Roanoke on the trip back from ConGT last weekend.  (Read about ConGT here.)  We were looking for a place to stop where we could do something fun that was on the way home.  Carolyn and Jen suggested Black Dog Salvage.  They watch Salvage Dogs, a DIY TV show that specializes in reclaiming items and repurposing them.  We went to  their warehouse.  It was AMAZING!  Check their website out here.

BDS Cake Lamp

Cake Cover Lamp

We met some of the guys and gals from the show and we  met their Black Dog, Sally, who  is an old girl getting ready to retire and her replacement, Maggie May.  I know you can’t believe I didn’t get a  photo of them but I was too busy petting them.  🙂   I did make a couple of purchases.  I got a really cool pair of lamps with spot lights that will work great a The Studio to help shed light in some areas that get a little dark at night.  I also found  a cool “Cake Cover” lamp that was just too cute to leave behind.

If you ever get to Roanoke…or better yet make a special trip there just to go to Black Dog Salvage.  It’s worth it!
