Today we celebrate Edouard Manet’s birthday. He was a French Impressionist painter who painted modern life. His works of art are beautiful. We’ve always loved his flower series. Learn more about his life and work here. And in Manet’s honor we will paint one of them, Carnations and Clematis in a Crystal Vase, 1883, for our February Famous Painter Party. Click here to register for that Paint Party. (We honored Manet in June 2016 at our Famous Painter Party by painting his beautiful Roses. You can see those here.) Happy Birthday Manet.

When Alannah came to Art Camp this summer she fell in love with my Tulip Palette Knife painting. She wanted to buy it for her room but instead we talked her into taking a lesson to do one of her own. And she did an excellent job yesterday painting with a palette knife for the first time. Great work girl!

I spent some time playing with a new paper painting last week in between art camp and regular classes. It’s a good start. I hope to be able to do a little more this week. We may even have time to do something similar during art camp. It’s Modern Art week and sometimes we have time to do an extra painting when we finish our spatter and color block art. :-)

This summer we have enjoyed meeting grandchildren who have been visiting our friends. And we especially glad that they came to The Studio to paint. This week I was delighted to work with Courtney. She is our friend Linda’s granddaughter visiting from Maryland. She chose to paint Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and she did a fantastic job. Come visit us again soon Courtney!

We painted a floral painting this week in the style of Matisse. The kids got to pick their colors and they went right to work. We talked about Matisse as I get ready to go see a Matisse exhibit in Boston. Can’t wait to see it.

My favorite flower…finally blooming after a year long wait. Oh how I wish they would bloom year round instead of just a couple of weeks a year. Allen brings them to me almost every day at this time of the year and I take loads of photos for reference. So, so pretty!
