The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show begins this evening in New York City.  This lovely lady is Hickory Wind, winner of last year’s show. And local resident…she lives in Flint Hill.   We had the good fortune to meet her last March when she came to the Opening Reception of the Bark for the Park art show.   The painting of her is acrylic, 12″x12″ on gallery wrap canvas.

We wish her a happy retirement.  And hope you will all watch the show and remember to rescue your best friends.  There are so many who need you.

Lincoln’s Birthday

It’s Lincoln’s Birthday.  Yes, that Lincoln too!  Since my Lincoln was adopted and we weren’t sure when his birthday was we figured with a name like Lincoln he came with a built-in birthday.  🙂

So here are the many faces of Stinkin’ Lincoln.  Happy Birthday to our boy who is turning 3 today.

Pups at Petco

Many thanks to Petco Store Manager Sherry Bailey for allowing us to sell raffle tickets for the Dog Park at Petco on Saturday.  Here’s Sherry with one of her many admirers!

We sold lots of tickets but more than that I got to take photos of lots of dogs.  Here are some of the scenes of the day:

Here are some kids who came to read to the dogs.

A wonderful therapy dog.

Five pugs - and they all belong to one couple!

And Tazer, a shelter dog, was looking for his family. He's a wonderful guy that just needs a chance to make you happy.

Dog Park I & II are two watercolor paintings that I did about 5 years ago as the first fundraiser for the Off-Leash Dog Park.    These pieces were raffled and then we made prints to sell all to benefit the park.  Prints are still available at Delilah’s with the proceeds benefiting the park fund.

Hard to believe that we’ve been working on building an off-leash park for that long but we have.  The good news is that we are working on our final fundraiser.  It’s a raffle also.  (We’ve come full circle!)  We call it the Westminster Dog Show Raffle because we have tied it to the show coming up February 13-14, 2012.  If you want to help just buy at ticket for $10.  The number on your raffle ticket will be randomly assigned to one of the 185 breeds showing this year at Westminster.  If your dog wins, you win $350.  You have a 1 in 185 chance to win.

We will be at Petco in Front Royal Saturday beginning at 10:00 to sell tickets.  Stop in and get yours.  Or stop by Delilah’s.  We have tickets there too.  Or contact me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com  and I’ll get a ticket to you.  When we finish this fundraiser we’ll be ready to break ground.  Can I hear a Halleluiah!!!!!

The Gingerbread House is no more.  We had a Gingerbread House eating party yesterday and Lincoln and Jed invited their friends Ordo and Dixie to come help them.

They had a great time and ate loads of gingerbread house, especially the roof with the milk bones.

Tammy’s Otis, acrylic on 12″x12″ canvas.  This little beauty is a rescue that belongs to my friends Tammy and Tim.  He’s a lucky fellow because I think she treats her babies as good as I do.  🙂

Meet Fancy.  She’s a German Shorthair Pointer pup that belongs to some friends.  I met her yesterday and you talk about cute!!!!  She oozes cute.

Now meet Jade.  Fancy is a member of her family and she wanted to paint a picture of her for her mom.  We met yesterday for a lesson and she came up with this terrific painting!  Great job!

And while Jade is only 7 years old, she is such a sweet and mannerly girl that she brought me a wonderful thank you note before we even started our painting.  Adorable!

It was 3 years ago today that we drove over to Ohio in a snow storm to pick up our boy Jed.  He was at a shelter in St. Clairsville, Ohio, after being picked up as a stray and he had been with them for several months.

The minute I saw his photo on Petfinder.com I knew he was meant to be with us.  He looked so much like my beloved, Jeffie, that I had to go get him.  (Did I mention that it was snowing like crazy?!)  More here about how we got Jed.

This first photo is one I took the first day he came to live with us.  I also had Truman at the time and Tru was not thrilled with the addition.  I was hoping they would be good buddies the way Truman and Jeffie were but that never panned out.

One of Jed’s favorite spots is in front of the fire.  He has turned into a really sweet and loving boy and we are so glad it worked for him to be ours.

And he makes a great painting model.  I’ve done several paintings of him including my favorite that you can see here.

And when Lincoln came to live with us, Jed got his best buddy.  They play till their tongues hang out!

I painted the largest pet portrait that I have ever done this holiday season.  A client commissioned me to paint the nine pets that had belonged to his wife in her lifetime from the very first pup to the big golden retriever they now have.  It was quite an undertaking.

I started with a rough sketch.  This was the hardest part of the process…deciding how to layout the painting in order to get every animal to appear in a way to show their unique beauty,

Then each animal was roughed in with color.  And finally I went back to each animal and completed details and added the back ground that you see in the finished version in the photo above.

I got a nice message yesterday from the client.  He said his wife loved it!  Whew!  So glad to hear it.

Here is how it looks hanging in its new home…
