Crochet has become very popular again. Maybe it’s the retro feel of it; maybe it’s because people want a fun hobby they can do that will wind them down at the end of the day. Who knows? But there is no denying that crochet is in again.

We have had so many people take crochet classes at The Studio and we are offering even more. This week (Tuesday) we have a Crochet Flowers class. Learn to make beautiful flowers that can be used to embellish hats, blankets, etc. And then on Sunday we have a Granny Square class where we will learn to make traditional Granny Squares as well as some that are NOT your Grandmother’s Granny Square. Small Crochet Flower

After I got tagged yesterday on Facebook about a Yarn Bombing there was a lot of conversation about that as well as making small crochet flowers to put in trees to make it look like spring until spring arrives. There are so many flower patterns but here is a simple little one that always turns out nice and can be made with 4 or 5 petals. Give it a try.

Small Flower

Ch 4 and join with sl st.

Round 1: Ch 1 and then 4 sc in ring, sl st in top or ch 1 to join

Round 2: ch 4, 2tr, ch 4, sl st in same stitch. Sl st in next chain.

Repeat in each sc to make 5 petals.

Cut yarn, weave in ends.

Crochet is BACK! It’s cool again and so many people are rediscovering this fun (and addictive) hobby. We have been having classes in crochet at The Studio and so many people are learning how to crochet.

One of the standards in crochet is the Granny Square. You can make so many things from squares from blankets to ponchos to hats to sweaters and more.

Here are some samples of traditional granny squares as well as a pattern chart for some “not so traditional” squares ( from Mes Favpros Tricot-Crochet website) that we will be looking at in our next crochet class on April 12th. Consider joining us. Click here for more info on the class.

My New Favorite Crochet Vest

I found a super Lion Brand pattern for a crochet vest that I really love. I made it with bulky yarn (as the pattern called for) and was so pleased when it was finished. It’s REALLY heavy. And I like the design so much that I reworked the pattern to make it in cotton so I can wear it in the spring. Here they are!

Summer Cotton Shawl

For years I would only crochet in the winter time because I mainly used wool or acrylic yarn and it is heavy and hot. But several years ago I got hooked on cotton yarn. It is lightweight and fun to work with. I just finished this Spring Cotton Shawl altering a pattern I saw that I really liked from using acrylic holding two strands of yarn to the cotton instead. I like the way it turned out especially since this was a Yarn Buster for me using up some leftover colors from previous projects. You can find the original pattern here.

Ruffled Scarf in Crochet

Because of all the crochet classes we have been offering lately at The Studio I have been doing more crochet and trying to find or write some fun patterns that students can use while practicing their new stitches. Here’s one that I have been giving students to practice single and (especially) double crochet. (There are a few more patterns here that you can check out also.)

Homespun Ruffle Scarf

I used Lion Brand Homespun Yarn – 2 (6 ounce skeins)

Ch 135. (You can adjust the length here. If you use a yarn that is smaller you may need to start with more stitches. Homespun is a bulky yarn.)

Row 1 – Turn and sc in each stitch across.

Row 2 – Ch 2. (Counts as 1^st dc) Turn and dc in first stitch. 2 dc in each stitch across.

(If you want a full scarf, repeat Row 2. – The sample above was made using two of row 2.)

Row 3 – Ch 2 (Count as 1^st dc) Turn and 2 dc in first stitch. 3 dc in each stitch across.

March is Here – It’s National Crochet Month!

March is finally here! It’s National Crochet Month. WooHoo! So many things to make. We have had several classes for crochet at The Studio over the past few months and many people have picked up this terrific hobby. I hope you will all get busy during crochet month and make something wonderful. Check out a few of the patterns that I have put together here.

More Yarn Busting Ideas

Here is another yarn buster idea…well, this one won’t take a whole lot of yarn but maybe you have some small ends of skeins lying around.

These little bracelets are made by just chaining about a 24 inch chain and then slip stitching in the 7th or 8th chain from hook to form the loop for the button. You can add additional colors to it by adding the next color and chaining the length of the 1st chain.

Yarn Stash Buster

Yesterday we talked about keeping a stash of yarn and/or fabric. I have a pretty good one and have had it for a long time. I use some up and then it seems to replenish itself. (LOL – Magically!)

Last year I learned about an organization, Comfort for Critters, that provides blankets to homeless pets. They rely on volunteers who crochet, knit and sew to donate these blankets. Our local shelter, Humane Society of Warren County is one of their participating organizations.

I have made several blankets to donate. The great thing about doing this is that they don’t require any specific size…they can be for small or large pets. And they don’t have to be any special color or design so you can practice your crochet stitches or try out new ones on these blankets. And anything you donate will be greatly appreciated.

There are plenty of other places where I am sure they would be happy to distribute warm blankets to people who need them locally too like C-CAP and local churches. So bust out some of that stash and do something nice for some pet or person and try learning a new stitch while you are at it.
