It’s always exciting when a show goes up but the coming down is kind of sad.

This was my favorite piece in “Minds Wide Open” abstract show that just ended at the Blue Ridge Arts Council.

Now to find a place for all these large paintings.

Maybe some will go to Delilah’s….and some may go to other shops.

The gallery is so empty and sad.  Good thing that the Arts Council  member show goes up this week.  It’s a terrific show featuring new work by arts council members.  Don’t forget to stop in and see it.  The opening reception will be Thursday at 5:00….same night as the Art Walk downtown.  Plan to come down for a great evening of art!

The Opening Reception for the “Minds Wide Open” show was a great success.  Lots of people came; lots of good food and wine!

Many thanks to those who came out last night.  It was a wonderful evening for me and Marlene.  We appreciate the wonderful comments and support.

In October 2009 I got a call from a new student who was interested in only learning to paint in abstract.  So we started lessons.  We have been having a great time painting several times each week as she has learned the ins and outs of painting in abstract.

Now we have been invited to have a show together as teacher and student.  The name of the show is “Minds Wide Open” and the organizers of the show thought that our works in abstract would be a good way to emphasize that theme.  The show will have each of our works, side by side, to show the different visions each of us had to the same lesson.  I think it will be very interesting.  I’ll let you know when it will go up so hopefully you can stop in to see it.

Today’s painting (that is an Ode to Joan Mitchell, a wonderful abstract painter from the mid 20th Century) shows the progress of a recent lesson and the finished painting.  I know that abstract is not everyone’s “cup of tea” hence the name of the show, Minds Wide Open.  It is sometimes good to take a look at something we don’t think we care for and we see something in it that we grow to appreciate.

Abstract Lesson in progress…..stand back!  This piece is a lesson that we are working on with a private student in abstraction.  This particular canvas is large, 30″x40″.  Often when you think or see abstract work it is very big.  This style lends itself to a large format.

When working with an abstract piece you can work it flat on a table or on the ground if it is very large.

Or on an easel if you have an easel large enough to hold the canvas.

This is my student, Marlene.  She came to me several months ago wanting to learn to do abstract work.  Now some people think that sounds funny because all an abstract painting is seems to be paint slung on a canvas, right?

Well no.  You must think about color theory and shapes in order to make a successful abstract work.

With this one, Marlene is well on her way.

Abstract Dreams I & II are acrylic on Gallery Wrap 1 1/2″ canvas measuring 12″x12″ each.  They are SOLD.

I enjoy abstract work and combining colors to see what works together well.  It is a lesson in trial and error.

I think these combinations turned out great!
