SAMSUNGAt the Wednesday morning Adult Art Class Kathy came in with this large canvas and an idea for a large representational abstract.  She hasn’t tried abstract before so we all decided to try something different.

The other Cathy in the class also painted a representational piece with a floral design.

My painting was a non-representational abstract painting.  It reminds me of Easter so I decided to call it that.  Easter is an acrylic on canvas and measures 18″x24″.    While everyone thinks that abstract is easy and anyone can do it, to be successful it requires some thought and planning.

Representational Abstract is a form of painting that combines the loose ease of abstract with art we recognize.  Even though we see the bright colors and long brush strokes in this work we can still see that it looks like a landscape scene.

This is some of the things we will explore on Saturday at the Art Workshop in Strasburg.  Join us for three hours of fun and learning.  Contact kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com .

Art Camp continues.  This week our focus is on Modern Art.  First we produced a color wheel to learn more about color mixing.

Then we applied what we had learned about color to painting  Rothko-like modern paintings.

The young artists did a great job producing these wonderful colors using only blue, yellow, red and white on their palettes.  Don’t you think?

At the first of the year for the abstract show that I did I painted a piece called Spring Explosion.  It was very popular.  In fact, it sold to a collector on the Virginia coast.  (You can see the original Spring Explosion by clicking here.)

I decided to paint a smaller version of the idea.   First I prepped the canvas.

Then I started adding some texture and the vase.

Now for more color.

And I keep adding color until I like the way it looks.  Finally a frame, and it’s done.

Spring Explosion II is an acrylic on canvas measuring 24″x30″ and is available for $295.
