Minnesota Truman

Minnesota Truman

A month or so ago I got an email from a man in Minnesota inquiring about a painting of a basset hound on my blog that he would like to purchase.  It was an older painting and it had already sold but I told him I would be happy to paint a portrait of his dog.  Turns out, his dog is a basset hound….named Truman!  So we shared stories and photos of his Truman and mine and I painted his Truman for him.

He got it yesterday in the mail and was pleased.  His Truman is very handsome.  Mine was too.  🙂

I spent a delightful afternoon at Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane painting a Pet Portrait for W.A.A.A.G., a non-profit that helps prevent cruelty to animals and helps them find forever homes.

I met the nicest group of volunteers dedicated to their goal and I especially enjoyed meeting Harry, a wonderful dog that is looking for his forever home.  He was my model for the painting. Here are some scenes from the day and notes.

Greenhouse #2

Greenhouse #2

A few weeks ago I posted a greenhouse painting that I did and said I wanted to do a series of these.  (Check that out here.)

Here is the next one.  I love how these look from the perspective of inside the greenhouse.  This one is an acrylic on a 8″x10″ canvas.

Painting in Plein Air is my favorite way to paint and I don’t get to do it as often as I would like.  Last Saturday we had a Plein Air workshop at Dickey RIdge Visitor Center in the Shenandoah National Park.  It was a wonderful morning….cool in the morning but then the sun peaked out and the view was fabulous.

The term “plein air” was used to describe Claude Monet and the Impressionists in France.  In French it means “open air” or “outside,” but since Monet’s time the term has been used to describe people who take their easels outdoors to paint.  Plein air painting is for people who love to be outdoors in nature, people who love to paint landscapes (as well as other outdoor subjects like buildings, old barns, flowers, gardens, etc).

The colors and detail you can see while painting outdoors is so much more vivid than you see when painting from photos.  And where we live there are so many lovely scenes to paint…the mountains, the valley, the Shenandoah and so much more.  (Click here and here to see other plein air painting session.)

We will hold another Plein Air workshop this fall so if you have ever wanted to give it a try start planning now to join us.

Last week I let my friend Sandra get me into another project.  LOL (You might remember Sandra as the one with whom I sewed the cussing jacket.  See it here.)

Now we have made Garden Princesses.  Sandra’s book called them scarecrows but I didn’t think they were scary at all.

I love how they turned out.  They are cut out of plywood and painted with acrylics and embellished with tin.  They are treated for outdoor use.

Thanks Sandra for getting me into this one.  I love my princess and she is working in the garden right now.  Can’t wait for our next project!

Doorman 1Doorman 2Last week I needed a little something new and fun to hang on the door at The Studio.  So I had a photo of a yard art tin can man that I had been wanting to make for my garden but decided he would look cool on the door too.

So here he is…my new doorman.    I just used a heavy gauge wire to string him together and adjust his limbs to look right.  If he were in the yard I would plant something in his head can but since he’s on the door I stuck silk flowers there.  Someone suggested that I put paint brushes in the head can.  Great idea.  That will be next!

Last year I went to Florida to teach a Paint Party (read about that here) and met Canary.  Canary was found covered in yellow paint, thus the name Canary.  This lucky cat fell into the lap of luxury!  I started the painting right after I returned from Florida but just got around to wrapping it up.
