   Does she have fleas? Sounds terribly obvious, but mine have gotten them this year and last year IN SPITE OF my dosing them with topical flea meds. My vet informs me that fleas have developed a resistance to Frontline and the like, and that this is a known problem. She’s told me to essentially double-up on dosages – give them their Frontline/Advantage every two weeks instead of just once per month. A bath with a colloidal oatmeal shampoo also helps. I did this last month with Cosmo – oatmeal bath, followed by sooner-than-usually-needed Frontline dose (two days after bath). And he seems to be fine now.

   What does the vet suggest? Has she been tested for allergies? My neighbor’s dog is allergy to grass, they have removed all the grass in the yard. The owner is a vet tech so has excellent access to healthcare for her little dog. Maybe even something she is exposed to in the house. Carpet? Cleaning products used on the hard floor? Detergent for laundrying her bedding? Dog shampoo? If she was scratching before she came to you maybe it will take meds to calm the allergy and then if away from the trigger the problem will be resolved.

   Use human grade food, stay away from wheat and corn, which is in most snacks and food. We use Orijen food, but there are others. The snacks you give the boys are bad for her. There is shampoo that helps and we give Tam a skin supplement. Still every spring and fall something blooms that causes him to itch. He licks instead of scratching. The food etc is a long term remedy that helps. Short term use caladryl or benedryl

   I agree with Barbara. Sometimes just ONE flea will do it.

   Also, a food with more restricted ingredients might be worth a try. Our L is on a food made of only fish and potatos. NO grains or dairy. (ours is made by Natural Balance but I know there are others.) It settled her tummy issues in 24 hours! Good luck!

   Sounds like the same problem mom had when we introduced the new cat to her house – except her other cat is the one itching and scratching. Turned out the new cat had fleas and her old cat is very allergic to fleas. So he goes to the vet for shots to help. Hopefully the flea problem will be contained soon and both kitties will be happy. So – are you sure no one has fleas? Going to the doggie park you never know. I’m sure you are checking for that but just passing along the info. Hope she is better soon.
