Lincoln and Dixie, acrylic on canvas, 14″x18″. Dixie is a dog in our neighborhood that loves to come visit us…usually without her parents permission. She is quite the escape artist. We welcome her visits as Lincoln loves her. You can read a little more about Dixie here.

While in Newport recently I had an opportunity to drive around taking reference photos. This one of the Oreo cow is one of my favorites. They are actually called Belted Galloways but I think they look like Oreos. Dorothy and I painted them last week in class. You can read more about them here.

Last night at art class I had the most delightful treat. Olivia, my little 5-year-old private student that you have seen before on my blog, and her grandfather from Florida came to paint together while he was visiting. It was so much fun!!!
Olivia helped G-Pa with his painting because she is such a pro. Can you think of anything cuter than this photo! Good job Olivia and you too, G-Pa!

A Quick Sketch in Plein Air
Posted in Plein Air, tagged daily painter, daily painting, impressionism, Landscape, oil painting on May 25, 2012| 2 Comments »
I got a chance to paint with the Plein Air Painters again today.
We painted at the Luray Avenue Boat Landing so I got to work on a painting I started there a few weeks ago. It’s almost finished and I’ll post in soon. But I wanted to show something a little different. I had only about 5 minutes to do a quick sketch before I had to pack up to leave so I sketched this scene to work on in the studio. Thought it might be interesting for you to see what the very beginnings looks like.

This past week in art class and then again on Saturday at the Wine Festival downtown I worked on this painting. This is Patriot and Zip, two beautiful rescue horses adopted by my friend Suzanne McMinn and her daughter, Morgan. (Patriot and Zip, oil on canvas panel, 11″x14″, available by contacting kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com)
I will be meeting these lovely guys in June when I go to Sassafras Farm, their home and home to Chickens in the Road, where I will be painting a mural for Suzanne. And while I am there Suzanne is having a fundraiser for Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue from where she rescued Zip and Patriot. Read about all of that here.
Next I’ll be making prints of this painting and anyone who donates at least $25 to Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue before the fundraiser in June at Sassafras Farm will receive a print suitable for framing. Take a look at Heart of Phoenix here and see the good work they do.
Fisherman and Painters

Yesterday I got to meet with the Thursday Plein Air painters for the first time in at least a year. It was great getting out there with other painters and chatting and painting.
I found a great spot by Lake Frederick with a fisherman sitting in a chair in the perfect spot. I didn’t even have to ask him to move for my composition to work. (Ha! Just joking. I wouldn’t do that.)
I like the way this little painting turned out. I did take some creative license and change color of his shirt since the green one he had one just blended with the background.

I worked on finishing up this painting while working at Delilah’s on Sunday and am pleased with the finished product.
Here is how it looked when I returned to the studio from a day of painting down by the river. Painting in Plein Air is a challenge that pushes artists to develop their skills. I like it! Read about the Plein Air day here.
