While I don’t have a new Farm Animal finished for today’s post I do have food that a little farm animal might eat….lettuce!

This is the beginning of a lesson we did in art class a few weeks ago.

It took a couple of weeks of lessons for me to complete this one  because I often start a piece and help others get their painting started and don’t get back to mine.  I did finish it in between other projects though and here is the way it turned out.

I was asked what I do with all the paintings I create.  Well, for example, with the Farm Animal series, I let them dry a little and then I frame and hang them up to completely dry.  Next I’ll take them to Delilah’s, my gallery in Front Royal, and exhibit them for sale.  And of course, any of my paintings are available through the blog by just contacting me.

The Farm Animal grouping is a really cute display….but the animals are so cute, it’s hard to go wrong!

I love painting these little goats.  They are just so expressive.  This is another of Suzanne McMinn’s little guys.  If you haven’t checked out her blog yet go to www.chickensintheroad.com for some terrific fun about life on her farm.

This is how “Another Little Goat” got it’s start.

Mean Rooster II is an oil on canvas panel measuring 6″x8″ and is available by contacting me.

I was asked why the name, “Mean Rooster”.  It’s because this fellow chased his owner around and she had to carry a broom for  protection anytime she was near him.  🙂

Rhett  is an oil on canvas panel measuring 6″x8″.

This is another in my Farm Animal series of paintings based on many photos of Suzanne McMinn’s animals.  You can see them at www.chickensintheroad.com .  This delightful blog of Suzanne’s draws you into her life on her farm in West Virginia where she bakes, cooks, makes candles, gathers eggs, and so many more farm chores.  It’s a very fun read.

And her pictures of the animals are adorable….

This is how the painting started.  I usually have a couple of reference photos taped to the easel so I can easily refer to them as I work.

And this is how it looks completed and framed.

Marley is an oil on canvas panel measuring 11″X14″.   He lives in Manassas with his dad and the painting was a birthday present for him.

I love doing pet portraits!  It is always fun seeing photos of peoples beloved pets and hearing stories about them.

Black dogs are the hardest for me to paint because it’s difficult to show the highlights of their features.  And I almost always do black dog portraits in oil because I can achieve the features better in oils.

This is how “Marley” started out on the easel.  I keep several photos close at hand so that I can continually refer to it.

The palette for “Marley” has some colors on it that you don’t necessarily see in the portrait but they are in there, mixed with other colors to achieve the look we want.

So Happy Birthday Marley’s Dad.  Hope you enjoy your painting!
