The artists who take regular art classes each week at The Studio are working to improve their skills.  Each one chooses their subject matter and get help individually from wherever they are to move their art forward.  Marie is a very good painter who did a fabulous job on these interesting and colorful trees and dog that she put together from several photos.  Nice work Marie!  One of the best things an artist can do for their art is to improve their color mixing skills.  Check out our upcoming workshop at The Studio on Color Mixing.  Click here for info.

colors-1colors-2A friend shared with me on Facebook a few days ago a fascinating story about an 1862 artist, Boogert,  almost 300 years ago who made a color mixing manual of almost 800 pages.  It is truly amazing that this was all done by hand.   The article starts like this:

“In 1692 an artist known only as “A. Boogert” sat down to write a book in Dutch about mixing watercolors. Not only would he begin the book with a bit about the use of color in painting, but would go on to explain how to create certain hues and change the tone by adding one, two, or three parts of water. The premise sounds simple enough, but the final product is almost unfathomable in its detail and scope.”  See the entire story by clicking the  link above or here.

Adult Class Pat with color chartIn our adult art classes students paint whatever subject matter they prefer.  That way they get to learn while painting something they would like to have.  But ever so often I ask them to do a lesson in color.  Yesterday we painted a color chart.  Here is Pat working on her chart.  This exercise has a painter list the colors they use most (about 10 of them) across the top and down the left edge of a chart paper or canvas and then one by one you mix the two corresponding colors together and put it on the chart.  This will give the painter practice in color mixing and when the chart is complete it provides a useful reference to keep handy when you need to find a particular color.  It is a little tedious to make a chart but worth it for what you can learn from doing it.
