Living with art that you love is a joy.  Most people buy art that speaks to them in some way whether it’s colors or shapes or subject matter.  Painters may approach it in a little different way.  I know that I often purchase art from artists I admire and then I hang it so that I can see it every day and enjoy learning from it.

I also collected art of dogs -SURPRISE!  And in my living room I have a wall that holds portraits of the dogs who have lived in this house with me.  You can see them in this photo – Rosie, Truman, Jed, Jeffie, Boo and Lincoln.

Friday morning I woke up and realized I really had not made any plans for my birthday on Saturday.  So I decided to go to DC for the night.  I love Washington, especially the National Gallery of Art so I booked room at the Hyatt Regency, one of the closest hotels to the gallery.  It was storming really hard when I got there around 3 p.m. but the people couldn’t have been sunnier!  When the young man checking me in came back after copying my i.d. and credit card he said, “It’s your birthday!”  I said “Yes, tomorrow.”  The young lady working with him at the registration desk said, “OMG, mine too!”  I said we must be twins then.  She laughed (could have been because she was a tall, beautiful, slender Black girl and I’m a dumpy white middle aged chick) and told him to upgrade my room.  Then he gave me a coupon for breakfast.  She told him to also give me a $50 room credit since I was 50!  WOW!  I felt really special.

I spent a wonderful evening having dinner and then relaxing and reading about the Chester Dale exhibit that I was planning to visit at the NGA the next morning.  I wake on my birthday, have a wonderful breakfast (on the house) and start out for the National Gallery.  The capital view above is right out of the front door of the hotel.  As I walk closer I realize there is some kind of rally going on at the capital.  I walk right up to within about 30 feet of the stage and see that it is the Dalai Lama.  He was in town for a conference on world peace.  So I listen for awhile and get a few shots.

It was really crowded.  You can see the capital lawn was full of people.

What a surprise and joy to get to hear his message about making a better world by making a better self.  Talk about being in the right place at the right time.  What a wonderful birthday message.

Come back tomorrow for Birthday Adventure Part II – National Gallery of Art.

One of the really cool things that  I get to do from time to time is go somewhere unusual to take photos that I might eventually paint.  Yesterday, the unusual place that I went was right here in our own backyard, Front Royal.

I was invited by Jessica Kordell, one of the animal keepers, to the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Parks Conservation Research Center that is located right here in Front Royal to take pictures to paint.

This text is directly from their website…

The Conservation and Research Center started primarily as a breeding center for endangered birds and mammals. Today, the black-footed ferret, Eld’s deer, and several species of Pacific island birds are being bred to maintain genetic diversity and provide reserves for highly endangered species.

The current priority for CRC’s animal collection is veterinary and reproductive research. By living in controlled environments, the birds and mammals—most of them little-known and endangered—provide ideal subjects for intensive study and the rapid acquisition of urgently needed information. Findings from these studies provide critical information for the management of captive populations and valuable insights for the conservation and management of wild populations.”

I took photos of the Clouded Leopards first.  They are beautiful.  I wish you could see them without the cage but you will get an idea from these shots.  Their feet are huge and their tails very long.

But it is their gorgeous coloring that gives them their name….huge “clouds” of spots or markings on their bodies.

The last photo gives you a better idea of the size of those paws.

I will share more of my photos from the CRC visit with you over the next few days.  It was such a terrific visit and many thanks to Jessica for inviting me.

Old Truck 7Since yesterday’s post I added in the grass and some details.

Old Truck 8And finally the finished painting!  I like the way it turned out.  It is an oil painting on canvas panel measuring 12″x16″ and is available by emailing me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com .

Asleep on red bed 1

And you can see that Truman got really excited about it.  He slept through about the last hour and a half of the painting time.  Working really wears him out.

Old Truck Beginning 2I am working hard on the Old Truck.  I don’t know why I love it so much but I do.  It has so much character!!!  The longer I look at the reference photo the more I see.

Here is the beginning of my painting with the photo.  I hope to finish it in the next few days but I keep looking at it and seeing more I want to add.  Yikes!

Old Truck Beginning 1Several months ago I posted the photos I took while driving around the farm in West Virginia where our cabin is located.  I ran upon this old truck and just loved how it looked.

Finally, I am making an attempt at painting it.  Doing something like this requires much more drawing than I am accustomed to doing.  Most of my paintings are impressionistic where the drawing is very loose.  But this one required more…

Metal Chair RedDo you ever see something, an object that is fairly common, but it reminds you of earlier times?  That is what I think every time I see one of these old metal chairs.  My grandmother, we called her Big Mama, had chairs like this in her yard.  When we were small kids we would go visit at least once a week, and Big Mama, Papa  and Mama would sit and rock while the three of us kids ran and played in the yard.  I can still see them sitting there each time I see one of these chairs.

I just found this great old metal chair at a yard sale in West Virginia a few weeks ago.  I snapped it up for a mere ten bucks and promptly painted it red.  Big Mama, Papa, and Mama are all gone now but every time I walk past this chair or sit in it to rock I think of them.  I think it was a small price to pay for memories that special.

One of the questions I get asked most as a daily painter is how do you find something to paint everyday.  And the answer is fairly easy.  I live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and am lucky enough to have a little cabin in the mountains of West Virginia on an old apple orchard so I see things everyday that I want to paint.  And I never walk out the door without my camera. (Well, sometimes I forget and then I see something I need a photo of and I have to beat myself up for a while which is never any fun!)

Across the Bridge

This is a view we see almost everyday as we come across the Shenandoah River into our town.  I snapped this while driving along (don’t tell Allen) so it’s not the clearest photo ever but it will work fine as a reference photo.

Road 3

And Truman, Jed and I drive down miles of roads all over the old apple orchard in search of great views.

And Jed and Truman are both experts at sniffing out a great location to set up and paint!

And sometimes when you least expect it you drive around a bend in the road and there it is, serendipity!  The thing you least expect to see but can’t wait to take photos of so you can preserve it to paint later.  Or maybe because you just can’t believe your eyes…..
