I love reading any story about someone who buys a masterpiece at a thrift shop or garage sale or about stolen art that is recovered but this particular story was of interest as it happened just down the road from where we live.  We have been following it since it was first reported.

Purchased for $7 because she liked the frame, Marcia “Martha” Fuqua learned later that she had an original Renoir.  You would think she had hit the jackpot but it is not turning out that way.

Shelly 1 Shelly 2We offer three l adult art classes at the Blue Ridge Arts Council on Wednesdays at 10:30 or 5:30 and Thursday at 5:30.  The classes are 1 1/2 hours and are for beginners to advanced paintings.  You can join the class at anytime as they are ongoing and each student works on a painting of their choice. (Read more about classes here.)  We do all study the same things, however, which is composition and color mixing.   I believe once you learn to mix and see colors you  really become a good painter.

Shelly has been painting with me for a couple of years and she has a terrific eye for color and color mixing.  Here is an example of two of her latest paintings.  We work from photographs and the colorful sunset shows just beautifully colors can be added to a painting.  Great job Shelly.  And the names on the tree is a gift for her son.  What a thoughtful and fun painting.  Keep up the excellent work Shelly!

Tea with Red Background

Tea with Red Background

I have been working on a couple of new paintings in the “Tea” series.  We have a new Chocolate and Tea shop in town, Shenandoah Confections at 126 E. Main Street, that has asked me to hang some work there so I have been freshening up the series.  Here is the first one:  Tea Bag on Red, 6″x6″ gallery wrap canvas, acrylic.

Signal Knob for CindyI have painted this view many times.  It is the one we see as we  look west from our little town.  This one, Signal Knob for Cindy,  is a 4″ x 12″ acrylic on gallery wrap canvas and was a Christmas gift for a friend who doesn’t live here any longer.

SOBA 12 12 SOBA 12 2One of the best things for me about traveling is going to small galleries and co-ops to see what artists in other parts of the country are doing.  Yesterday I stopped into Bluffton, SC, an adorable little town filled with creative people.

They have an “Arts District” filled with shops and galleries including the gallery of the Society of Bluffton Artists, a non-profit organization established to promote a stimulating community environment for the visual arts and artists.  It is operated by artist members.  They featured a wonderful exhibit called 12 – all the paintings were 12″x12″ and available for $150 each.  We saw some wonderful examples of local and regional art.  Terrific idea.

When you travel be sure to explore local art!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for my blog.  It’s an interesting look back:

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 56,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 21 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
