In July I spent a day at the National Gallery of Art enjoying the Chester Dale Exhibit.  If you haven’t seen it, you must go.  And as promised I am sharing with you some of the paintings that I saw there.  I chose these three today because I re-watched an amazing film yesterday that involves these two painters.  It’s called Modigliani.  Andy Garcia plays the painter and does an excellent job.

Painter Amedeo Modigliani is famous for his portraits with the singularly recognizable elongated faces. And one of his greatest rivals is Picasso.

Here are two of the Modigliani’s and a Picasso from the Chester Dale exhibit for you to enjoy.

I love going to Washington DC.  The first time I went was as a child of about 10 years on a family vacation.  I fell in love with the history, the museums, everything about it and I think that was the start my love of history and the reason I majored in history in college. (Yes, history, not art.)

Yesterday, my cousin Linda,  who is visiting from Georgia, and I spent the day at the National Gallery.  There are so many wonderful exhibits there now that we couldn’t see it all.

However, we did get to see the Gauguin:  Maker of Myths exhibit.  It was the last day and terribly crowded but worth it.  You can see more here.    We also saw the Small French Paintings exhibit which is a permanent exhibit that I’ve seen many times but I love it and always enjoy it so.

This Boudin is an example of the beautiful paintings in that collection and you can read more that collection  here.

But the most amazing thing we saw was the Chester Dale collection.  What a stunning collection of art.  And what an interesting couple they were.  Well worth a trip to the NGA.  Go if you haven’t already.  The Dale’s left a generous endowment as well as a tremendous collection of work from impressionism to modern art to the NGA.  This huge collection is a must see.  Read more about it here

Any day spent viewing art with a good friend is a perfect day.  And when the art includes dogs ….

We had a terrific weekend in New York City.  Stayed at the Hotel Edison, an art deco style-1930’s hotel.  The art was extraordinary.  These painted panels circled the lobby waiting area.

We just returned from a quick trip down to Jekyll Island Georgia for the Commander’s Fly-In.  We stayed at the Jekyll Island Club which was the old Millionaire’s Club.  It was built in the very early 1900’s by several millionaires as an exclusive escape.

We were there for Allen to meet with other pilots who have Commander airplanes.   About 40 came from all over the United States, as far away as California.

There was a lot of watching planes fly…..

And lots of standing around talking and looking at planes….

And lots of pretty scenery like the beach…

and the marsh.

And beautiful, huge live oak trees with moss hanging.

And shrimp boats going out to work.

But most of all there was great fellowship and sharing of information.  These are some of the pilots who came to the final evenings dinner by the ocean.  (That’s Allen, fifth from the right.)  We had a very good time.

We spent the weekend at our friends Sally and Bob’s farm in Southern Virginia.  And the dogs were in heaven.  Counting Jed and Lincoln there were 11!

All of Sally’s dogs are rescues, bless her heart!  And the latest is Jack.  He’s the smallest guy she’s ever had and she is besotted with him and his underbite.

Jed and Lincoln played in the water, walked, ran and played for two straight days and now they are exhausted.  Yeah!

Lincoln with a couple of his “girls”.  We decided that Lincoln is definitely a ladies man.  He loved all the girls dogs and they LOVED him.

Michigan view from planeThis past weekend we flew to Michigan to Boyne Falls.  This is what it looks like from the air.

Michigan Planes in Line 1We met with a group of folks that all have Commander airplanes.  It’s a great group of folks.  All crazy and fun!  We did a fly out one day to Mackinaw Island.  This is the view from out of the back window of the other planes lined up on the taxi way all ready to fly out together to Mackinaw.

Michigan Mackinaw view from planeYou can see the prop in this shot of Mackinaw Island.  The big white box you see is the Grand Hotel.

Michigan Mackinaw TaxiThe great thing about Mackinaw Island is that there is no motorized vehicles.  So when we all arrived and call for the taxi, this is what came to pick us up.

Michigan Mackinaw Grand Hotel from TaxiLife is definitely moving at a much slower pace on the island.  It took 20 minutes to get from the little airport to the downtown area.  This is the view from the “taxi” of the road leading to the Grand Hotel.

Michigan Mackinaw pilotsAnd this is the crew of pilots that made the trip over to Mackinaw.  About 20 men and me!!!  You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to get them all moving in the same direction.  It was just like herding cats!

It was a great afternoon and I’m so glad that I got to see Mackinaw Island.  It is one of those places on my list to see and it was worth it.  The day was gorgeous and I got lots of great photos for my reference file for painting.  Maybe you’ll see one soon.

Space Shuttle 1So it’s Sunday and we are on our way home from this big “aviator” weekend of the Air Races in Reno and we have to make a quick stop in Amarillo for a company picnic with our hosts, the Smiths.  We land at the Amarillo airport and look out the window and what do we see????   The space shuttle!!!

Space Shuttle 2Absolutely amazing.  Keep in mind that I am with a group of pilots…all weekend they have gone to the airshow each day and drooled over airplanes and airplane equipment and now, here we are in the heart of Texas and what do we see?  The ultimate in aviation…the space shuttle.

I took Allen’s picture with it because I figured no one would believe we had seen it.

Space Shuttle 3So, of course, we delayed our trip out to the picnic for about 10 minutes so we could watch the shuttle take off, piggybacking on this HUGE airplane.  There were a few others around taking pictures but overall I guess it is something that NASA doesn’t advertise for safety reasons.  So we watched it take off.  I even got a minute long video of it.  (Sorry I can’t post it  here for you to see. 😦 )

When we left Reno we flew around Area 51, flew right over Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon and then we land and to see the Space Shuttle, all within a two hour period of time.  Can you imagine????

I tell you, the Smith’s are quite the hosts.  When they plan a trip, they really plan a trip!!!!   Thanks again for all the fun.

Reno Air Races

HawkerThis past weekend Allen and I were invited by friends to go to Reno to the Air Races.  While that may not have been the most thrilling thing for me to see, the guys loved it as they are all pilots.

The aviation excitement started when we flew on a private jet into Reno.  Less than 5 hours from Winchester airport to Reno.  You talk about spoiling us for commercial travel.  Who would ever want to fly commercial again???

Air Race 2Air Races are exactly what they sound like.  Old airplanes and new race around a “track” in the sky.  Here is an old WWII trainer.  There were about 6 or 7 of these in the race…all in perfect condition.  Amazing!

Air Race 3And another example of the trainer….

Air Race 1And this is how it looks as they race by the bleachers.

Air Race 4There were also demonstrations of different types of jets.

Blue Angels 1By far, the  most exciting display and the one that most people came to see was the Blue Angels.  They travel with a large support plane.  I’m sure that the guys could tell you the exact name for each of these but I can’t.

It was pretty amazing to see the maneuverability of that large plane as it did its show.

Blue Angels 4As the team was getting ready to go up they introduced each of the pilots.  Imagine our surprise when they introduced this one as a naval pilot from Warrenton, Virginia!

Yeah!

Blue Angels 6They flew in tight formation and did several passes where they were only 18 inches apart from wing to wing.  Can you imagine how much you would have to trust the people you work with to actually do that?

Blue Angels 5Some of the passes they even flew with one plane upright and one upside down….and so close together!

What a show!!!

The guys went to the show three days in a row.  I only went once and opted to go to the Nevada Museum of Art to a show about California Plein Air painters from the 1920- 40’s.  It was amazing as well.

Overall, it was a terrific trip…especially for the pilots that were with us.  I know Allen enjoyed it immensely.  On the trip home, we stopped in Amarillo, Texas for a company picnic with our hosts.  And when we landed at the airport there we got another big surprise.  I’ll fill you in on that tomorrow.  🙂

A Great Book

I was asked recently by someone who paints as a hobby what one who paints for a living does for a hobby.  Good question.  One of the things I really enjoy when I am not painting is reading.  I read a lot actually, especially at night….trouble sleeping and all that.  Anyway, I thought I might share, from time to time, a really exceptional book just in case anyone else likes to read too.

Fron Wikipedia Listing

The book I want to tell you about today is one that was recommended to me a year or so ago called Travels with Charley in Search of Amercia by John Steinbeck.  Yeah, I know.  That’s what I thought too…..sounds stuffy.  But trust me, it’s not.  I bought the book and laid it on my bedside table and it just waited there for over a year until finally I decided to try to muttle through it.  Boy was I surprised when I found that I couldn’t put it down.

It’s all about a road trip that Steinbeck took in this specially made camper with his dog Charley.  He said he did it to get back in touch with America.  The amazing thing to me was that many of the problems that he discusses as he travels around are still some of the same ones we are dealing with today.  And he made this trip in 1960!

This is one of those books that you will be so amazed by that you will read passages aloud to friends.  I know, because that is what I kept doing.  Trust me, you’ll like this one whether you like dogs, you like travel, or just like a good story.  Pick it up and give it a spin.
