A few years ago Brother decided that he wanted to learn to play the fiddle. So he taught himself how! Now he goes to fiddle fests and Bluegrass jams and fiddles and fiddles. I wanted to make him a special quilt. I decided that a large fiddle applique playing with darks against lights would be best. I like how it turned out but once Wendy Hughes, long-arm quilter extraordinaire, performed her magic it turned into an incredible quilt. Thanks Wendy! I love it…and I just heard from Brother. I mailed it to him and he got it today. He loved it too! 🙂

Sandy is Lincoln’s sitter. She has been with us even before Lincoln so she has been a family friend for a very long time. Recently she was admiring a specialty quilt that I made for another friend and I told her I would make one for her that featured something she loved. Did I mention that Sandy is an amazing photograper? Well, she is. So I wanted to make her quilt with a camera theme. I asked her to send me some photographs she had taken….some of her favorites. Having received them I started laying out a design that would include a camera and film and this is what I came up with. The camera and film roll are applique. The black and white film is pieced fabric made to look like film. I printed Sandy’s photos on EQ8 Satin Printable Fabric Sheets. The border fabric with cameras I got through Joann’s. This quilt took way more time in planning than I anticipated but I was happy with the results. And I think Sandy liked it!

Here is another Jelly Roll Quilt that we will be learning to make at an upcoming Quilting Workshop on Saturday, May 20th. It is so convenient to buy jelly rolls, a group of 2 1/2″ x 42″ strips in a variety of coordinating fabrics, to cut down on cutting time and enabling you to work up a quick quilt. Another reason that quilters love jelly rolls is that the fabrics are wonderfully matched so it cuts out having to select and match fabrics. If you would like to learn to quilt this is a good starter project. Click here to register and for more information.

One of the best things about social media is connecting to people with the same interests. I follow a couple of quilting groups on Facebook and yesterday there was a quilter who was asked to make a quilt for the “Quilts of Valor Foundation” on short notice and she put out a request for help. She was asking for help making red, white and blue quilt blocks (12 1/2″). Often when I read requests they are for pretty big projects and I don’t feel like I have to time to take them on but two blocks I knew I could get done quickly. I made a Flying-x and a Variable Star….so off they go in the mail to her today. If you aren’t familiar with “Quilts of Valor” you can click on the link and read about them. They have a very cool mission.

I finished up the Layer Cake Custard Quilt when I got back from the retreat. I found the pattern at The Fat Quarter Shop and used Adventure by Elizabeth Hartman for Robert Kaufman Fabrics, a layer cake that I had in my stash as well as a batik backing I had been holding on to for just the right project. It’s a Quilt as You Go project.

I completed this Starlight, Starbright quilt based on a Missouri Star Quilt Company pattern. I altered it a bit with a border around the star. This one I made as a traditional quilt top and sent it out to be longarm quilted. It turned out great! I love the look. It was made using charm packs (5″ squares) plus some yardage for the star and borders. I’m excited to share this one now as we have a tour group leaving next month to go visit the Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton MO. We will be making several stops along the way there and back to visit fabric and quilt related businesses. We’ll be gone for 9 days and I know we will see and acquire lots of great quilt related items. Stay tuned to see more about our adventure. And in the meantime watch in the next few days our Quilt Sale.

There is just something about the Wonky Windmill pattern that I love. And as usual I pulled a bunch of different fabrics from the scrap box. (I have got to get rid of some of this scrap fabric!) I am happy with the way it turned out and it was really fun to make.

I saw a similar quilt to this while at the quilt show in Hampton last spring and knew I wanted to give it a try. The one there had strips of fabric for the stripes but I love a scrappy quilt so I made mine using small blocks in a variety of red and white fabrics. Theirs had Friendship stars but I love using a variety of Sawtooth Stars so I mixed mine up. I made it as a Quilt as You Go so the entire quilt was made on my Babylock Unity. I’m happy with how it turned out. I call it “Yankee Doodle”.
