Born November 15, 1887, Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist who became known for her large floral blossom paintings, bone paintings, and landscapes around her New Mexico home.  She is often called the “Mother of American Modernism”.  Her vision was unique and she stood by it often saying that her work spoke for her and it  didn’t need her words to enhance it.

Almost everyone will recognize an O’Keeffe painting when seeing one as it has a distinct look and style.  She lived until 1986. You can learn more about her by visiting the O’Keeffe Museum website here.

Winding down with my photos from my recent visit to The Phillips.  Before I share them let me just encourage you to make a trip there if you are in DC.  It’s worth the time.  It’s an exceptional collection of post-impressionist and modern art.  Duncan Phillips was a brave collector of art who introduced America to modern art through his collection and exhibits.  Read more about him here.

My favorite story about Phillips involves him standing in front of  “Luncheon of the Boating Party” , probably the most important painting Renoir ever painted, with Albert Barnes, also an art collector and founder of the Barnes Collection in Philly who collected almost 200 Renoir in his lifetime.  Barnes says to Phillips, “That’s the only Renoir you have, isn’t it?”  to which Phillips says, “It’s the only one I need”.

Today I’m sharing some of Phillips collection of Georgia O’Keeffe.  Wonderful examples of her work.

Art Camp Session 2 Day 1 - 2Session 2 of Art Camp started yesterday with young artists (age 14-18) painting a Georgia O’Keeffe Seashell.  We discussed her work as well as talked about differences in oil and acrylic paints.  We did this one in oil.

Fabulous!!!

Art Camp Session 2 Day 1 - 3And these girls worked so quickly that we were able to do a little miniature landscape also.  I love how we all painted from the same reference photo but all got a little different look.  Great job!!! Tomorrow we work in acrylics and we’ll be visiting Vincent.  😉

SAMSUNG SAMSUNGGeorgia O’Keeffe, well-known for her very large paintings of flowers, said, “I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty.”

Last week  one of my longtime art students requested that we paint an O’Keeffe flower.  We chose the Calla Lily.  And didn’t the kids do a wonderful job with their interpretation?!
