Marine Corps Memorial Mr Taylor 1 Marine Corps Memorial Mr Taylor 2 Yesterday Mr. Taylor came by to pick up the painting of the Marine Corps War Memorial that I have been working on the last week or so.  He was very happy with it.  (Whew!)  A friend and good customer (who was also a veteran) was in the shop at the time and so Mr. Taylor explained the significance of the painting to him.

The photo was from around 1963 when he served in the drum corps.  He is the first drummer on the second row in the painting.  (He was pointing that out to us in this photo.)  He described how they had these events every week throughout the summer months and for special occasions.  And the two of them talked about Vietnam where they both served.  It was so interesting to hear their stories.  Thanks Mr. Taylor for the commission and for sharing some of your history with me.

Our art class this week was displaced from our normal meeting space but we still had  great classes.  Cathy worked on a painting of a dog she once had – a Poodle!  Good job Cathy.

The painting of the Marine Corps War Memorial is now complete.  Many thanks to everyone who has made comments about it on my Facebook page.  This has been a popular painting and I have had several requests for prints.  I will make prints available.  As soon as they are ready I will post a link to order.

Marine Corps Monument with foreground laid in – no details

Continuing work on the Marine Corps Memorial painting.  Getting closer to being done.  Yesterday I worked on the foreground.  There are still lots of details to add in but the color is laid in on the uniforms.  Hoping to wrap it up today.

Marine Monument 3 I continued the work on the Marine Corps Memorial painting yesterday.  I got in the trees and bushes as well as the band in the background.  It’s coming along.  Now to get the foreground finished.

Several months ago while I was in the midst of painting ball parks I got an unusual commission request.  A gentleman brought in an old photo that he wanted transformed to canvas of a formation in front of the Marine Corps War Memorial.  The photo is probably from the 70’s and he is one of the guys in the formation.  This is not something that I ordinarily do but he was insistent so I took the commission.  I worked on it this weekend and here is how it is going so far.

Shen River 3 Shen River 2The walking path to and from the dog park along the Shenandoah River offers so much inspiration.  Every season of the year it’s beautiful.  This is how it looked yesterday morning as the “kids” and I strolled there.

Jacob and Ethan collageThis week Jacob and Ethan made layered collages in art class.  We used all sorts of interesting things to build the art from buttons and ribbon to old magnets and plastic forks.  They turned out great.  Good job guys.  Very creative.

O’Keeffe Poppy

Born November 15, 1887, Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist who became known for her large floral blossom paintings, bone paintings, and landscapes around her New Mexico home.  She is often called the “Mother of American Modernism”.  Her vision was unique and she stood by it often saying that her work spoke for her and it  didn’t need her words to enhance it.

Almost everyone will recognize an O’Keeffe painting when seeing one as it has a distinct look and style.  She lived until 1986. You can learn more about her by visiting the O’Keeffe Museum website here.
