This is what the little Singer Featherweight Sewing machines were made for…travel!  They were advertised as portable, and while in today’s terms, eleven pounds may seem heavy, they really are easy to take along.  They are perfect for piecing quilt blocks.  I love them!  This one is a fairly rare 1961 Tan Featherweight… named Barbara Ann for my mom.  She’s traveled with me to the last two retreats.  I try to rotate the Featherweights I have so they all get used and I can keep them maintained.  I have 6 now…Oops, how did that happen???!!!  Did I mention that I love these little machines?

We had a terrific Stitch & Bitch retreat this past weekend. It was our 8th one out at Shenandoah River State Park. So much fun playing games, winning prizes, sewing projects, sharing ideas, enjoying demos, and so much more. We always have a great time together. Our space is limited for this retreat but if you are interested we can add your name to our waitlist so be sure to reach out if you are interested. We do this twice a year. You can see from the photos how much fun we have!

A few weeks ago I made this little banner that I donated to our local Humane Society for their Barks & Bags Fundraiser event.  I hope it auctioned off and raised some $$$ to help those babies at the shelter.

The Northern Shenandoah Valley Quilt Show was this weekend in Berryville and it was awesome. What a great job the local guilds did putting this show together. Just take a look at a very small selection of the almost two hundred quilts that were on display. So much talent!!!!!

One of our Wednesday evening art students, Leslie, reimagined Martin Johnson Heade’s Cattleya Orchid and Three Hummingbirds from 1871 and made it her own by recreating it into a collage piece. She painted each small piece seperately and then adhered it to a canvas raising it slightly. The effect is amazing! She even used small bits of moss to dangle from the upper trees. Great work Leslie. The patience you exhibited really paid off. It’s fabulous!

Last week I shared that I had started a third quilt top while at the retreat in Pennsylvannia and that I was working on my 1961 Featherweight. (Read about it here.) When I got home I set the little machine up and continued to piece the Baltimore Square quilt top. I was enamored with this pattern. I’m not sure why but ever since I saw it I wanted to give it a try. So I finished the top a few days ago. I love that I did it on that sweet little Featherweight. And of course, Lincoln helped! I’ll send this one out to a longarm quilter soon and when it is finally completed I will share the final result. Oh, and yeah, there is over 2800 little 1 1/2″ (finished size) blocks in this quilt. 🙂

I started this quilt while at the quilt retreat a few weekends ago. I took my 1961 tan Featherweight to the retreat to piece several quilts that I was working on there. This little machine is a jewel! It has the most perfect stitch so it is gem for piecing. This quilt, the Baltimore Square, involves sixteen fabrics and many 2 inch strips that are then cut apart and sewed back together again. You know that is the craziness of quilters….taking perfectly good fabric, cutting it apart and then sewing it back together, over and over. LOL! So since getting home from the retreat I brought out the little machine that I named Barbara Ann after my mom. (Featherweights are often named and all of mine are. Read more about that here. ) And she has been working away the last two days to sew these pieces together. When this quilt is completed there will be almost 2900 2 inch pieces all together to make a beautiful quilt. I’ll share it when it’s done.

On Monday we had the opportunity to hear Susan Bloss speak at the Rappahannock Library as she gave a presentation on Decoding Quilts. It was very interesting as she talked about the different elements involved in making a quilt. Susan did a fabulous job! She’s a terrific quilter and shared so many of her creations with us. If she offers it again be sure to go hear her.

Arrived yesterday in New Freedom, PA for a quilting retreat with about 20 other quilters….a great group of woment with beautiful ideas and skills. It’s so much fun to see what others are doing. I put together a quilt that I have been working on for a possible class. I call it the “Perfect Picnic Quilt” because it has a checkboard in the center so after you eat your picnic you can play checkers! Fun, hun???!!!! Watch for an upcoming class. And watch for more photos of the beautiful things these quilters are doing here.
