I have never been a big bread eater but when I do want bread this is it. As a kid, my mom used to make lasagna once a week and she always made Butter Twists to serve with it. I make it and just eat them with nothing else. They are that good.
Mix together 2 cups self rising flour, 3/4 cup cottage cheese, 3/4 cup milk, 1 tablespoon sugar.
It should be thick.
Form a ball and place on a floured surface.
Roll out dough til it is about 1/2″ thick and cut into 1″ strips.
Dip each strip in butter. Yeah, I said butter. Now you see why I eat these with nothing else.
Cover them thoroughly with butter and twist as you lay onto a baking sheet.
Bake at 450 degrees until golden brown.
And this is the final result. Delicious bread to serve especially with Italian foods.
This is another one of those comfort foods that reminds me of Mama.
Hope you like them too!

Shenandoah River from the Low Water Bridge
Don’t forget that this Saturday is the “On the River” Festival in Front Royal. For more information on the festival you can go to this link: http://www.canoecapital.org/
As I have said many times, as an artist I am so lucky to live in the Shenandoah Valley with the river and mountains and valley views. It is a gold mine for painters. I hope others will come out on Saturday and celebrate one of the treasures that is ours.

Sometimes it is good to practice things that are most difficult to paint. And every painter has something that is a challenge. For me it is flowers. They are really difficult to paint without them appearing flat.
One way I have learned to practice to try to improve my technique is through tonal studies. I paint the set-up in tones of black and white, usually with acrylic paint. Then I allow that to dry.
Next I add some color, using oil color and a glazing medium, I paint thin layers on top of the tonal study.
I continue to adjust the colors until I get it to a place I like. Often, once it is at this point, I will set it aside and look at it for several days, deciding what else it needs to complete the painting.
And that is where I am with this study. I continue to tweak it. And maybe one day, when it is really finished, I will post another photo of it.

Sky-River-Land
While working on a couple of pieces for the upcoming River Show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council I kept thinking of an abstract piece that would represent the look of the river and it’s surroundings. This is what I came up with.
It is a nonrepresentational abstract on 24″x12″ gallery wrap canvas. The three smaller canvases each represent sky, river, and land.
I haven’t done abstracts lately but I really enjoy the freedom of the work. Maybe I’ll do some more this week.

"River's Edge"
“River’s Edge” is an oil on 12″x24″ canvas. It is a view across the Shenandoah River with the mountains in the background. This is another painting that I have just completed for the upcoming River Show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council that is being held in conjunction with the River Festival on August 15th in Front Royal.

I was asked recently by someone who paints as a hobby what one who paints for a living does for a hobby. Good question. One of the things I really enjoy when I am not painting is reading. I read a lot actually, especially at night….trouble sleeping and all that. Anyway, I thought I might share, from time to time, a really exceptional book just in case anyone else likes to read too.

Fron Wikipedia Listing
The book I want to tell you about today is one that was recommended to me a year or so ago called Travels with Charley in Search of Amercia by John Steinbeck. Yeah, I know. That’s what I thought too…..sounds stuffy. But trust me, it’s not. I bought the book and laid it on my bedside table and it just waited there for over a year until finally I decided to try to muttle through it. Boy was I surprised when I found that I couldn’t put it down.
It’s all about a road trip that Steinbeck took in this specially made camper with his dog Charley. He said he did it to get back in touch with America. The amazing thing to me was that many of the problems that he discusses as he travels around are still some of the same ones we are dealing with today. And he made this trip in 1960!
This is one of those books that you will be so amazed by that you will read passages aloud to friends. I know, because that is what I kept doing. Trust me, you’ll like this one whether you like dogs, you like travel, or just like a good story. Pick it up and give it a spin.

“View from the River Bridge” is an oil on canvas panel measuring 9″x12″. I started this painting several weeks ago as a lesson in the Wednesday night art class. We did the landscape work with the fields, mountain and river. Then when I brought it home and looked at it for awhile I decided that it needed something more. The photo I used was one I snapped while driving along. (See the photo by clicking this link. https://lifeofadailypainter.com/2009/06/30/serendipity/ )
So I added the bridge to the painting. This is one that will be entered in the upcoming River Show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council in Front Royal.

One of the hardest things to deal with as a pet owner is when one of the babies we love so much is frightened by thunderstorms. I’ve had a couple of dogs that have thunder fear.
Jed, my newest boy, is scared to death of the sound….also fireworks. I’ve tried lots of things and what seems to work best for him is when I can predict the storm and give him some Rescue Remedy and then put on his thunder shirt. (This photo is of Jed in the window seat with his thunder shirt on after a storm has passed. Thanks Carol Ann for taking this photo for me.)
The shirt serves to swaddle him and make him feel safe. There is a commercial product on the market called Anxiety Wrap that promotes this swaddling effect. But it’s expensive so I use a really tight t-shirt. It sounds funny but it does seem to help. Jed also has a special place that he goes when the thunder starts. His spot is in the bathroom in a special little bed. All of these things that we have been doing for Jed over the last few months has helped him. At least now when the storm starts he doesn’t totally freak out like he did in the beginning. Hope our solutions might help others out there with scared babies. If you have a solution that has worked, please add a comment here to share it with the rest of us.
