Yesterday we had the first day of Art Camp.  With 7 fabulous young artists working hard all morning they created their version of Edouard Manet’s (1832-1883)  “Pinks and Clematis in a Crystal Vase”, oil on canvas 22″x14″, painted in 1882 in Paris and currently on display at Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France.

I think their versions look GREAT!  How about you?

On this day in 1883 Edouard Manet died.  He was only 51 years old.  He was instrumental in the conversion of painting from realism to impressionism.  Two of his early works caused much controversy in the art community of the time – The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia.  These paintings are often discussed when studying impressionism and modern art.

I am much more fond of some of his still life and floral paintings…and of course, his dogs.

Art Camp July 22 ManetAnother session of Art Camp is off to a GREAT start!  Yesterday we painted a wonderful copy of Manet’s Peonies, one of my favorites.  And the kids painting turned out magnificent.  Terrific painters.  Can’t wait to see how today’s painting turns out.

Ps.  I got a question about why one kid keeps covering his face.  His parents prefer that his image not be posted on the internet but I wanted him to be able to show off his beautiful work so this is our compromise.  🙂

Yesterday at Art Camp we studied two very interesting artists, Edouard Manet and Jackson Pollack.  That is the beauty of these combination weeks, we compare really different types of art.

Here are the “Lemonheads”!  The girls painted copies of Manet’s “Lemon Still Life”.  They did a great job!

And then we started working on a Jackson Pollack like drip painting.  The young artists really LOVED this part.  We went to the park so we could spread out and work with really thin paint.

Yesterday I enjoyed a wonderful visit to the National Gallery of Art with some of my students from the Southerlands.  There was 13 of us that made the trip to see the Picasso Drawings.

No photography was allowed in that exhibit but this was the entrance poster so at least you can see what it was like.  The interesting thing was that there were probably about 50 pieces in the exhibit and probably half or more belonged to private collectors.  Really interesting.

After we finished seeing Picasso we wandered to the newly opened gallery of impressionist paintings….some of my favorites.

Paul Cezanne, French painter, 1839-1906. "The Artist's Father, Reading L'Evenement", oil, 1866.

Edouard Manet, French Painter, 1832-1883. "The Railway", oil, 1873.

Manet, "Masked Ball at the Opera", oil, 1873.

More to come tomorrow…
