Untitled 1968 – Cy Twombly
Modern Art is very popular at auctions. When I asked my students, however, it’s not always their favorite. But still…..it sells and sells big.
Take a look at the sale this week at Sotheby’s that fetched $242 million in sales including this Twombly Untitled piece from 1968 that went for $36.7 million. What do you think?

“A Sotheby’s auction featuring rare impressionist and modern works by Monet, Matisse and Picasso has broken the record for the highest sales total ever reached at a London auction. The evening auction on Tuesday raised an overall total of £186.44m ($284.11 million), and broke auction records for five individual works by artists including Seurat and Malevich as bidders from 35 different countries clamoured to get their hands on the many iconic works up for sale.”
“The most expensive work of the night was Monet’s 1908 oil painting Le Grand Canal, which sold for £23.7m ($36.12 million)– the highest ever price for any of Monet’s Venice view works. The painting, which was part of a private collection, had been on loan to the National Gallery in London since 2006.”

An unusual sale took place at Sotheby’s this week of 15 paintings by well-known British artist L.S. Lowry. All 15 paintings were in the collection of A.J. Thompson who only collected Lowry’s work for the past 30 years. Read more about it here.

Picasso Painting Sells for $45 million
Yesterday a Pablo Picasso portrait of his mistress, Marie-Therese Walter sold for $45 million. She was often called Picasso’s Muse.
Sotheby’s held an auction of impressionist, modern and surrealist art. The sale was the first of a series held in London this month by Sotheby’s, Christie’s and smaller auction houses. You can read more about the sale here.
