A 90th Birthday Present

A few weeks ago a good friend asked if I could paint a watercolor of the pond on her property. Her dad’s 90th birthday was coming up and it was his “favorite” place and she wanted to give it to him.

We rode out to her place and took a few photographs one afternoon. And I could see why he loved the place so much. It was lovely…and peaceful…and such a beautiful setting.

Even the outhouse was cool and perfectly placed in the tall shade trees.

After much rumination of the matter I decided to paint the view with the trees in front. I like the way it turned out. And she said her dad loved it too! Happy 90th Birthday.

Maggie Paints the Demo

North Entrance, Shenandoah National Park

Yesterday I was asked if I ever have time to paint since I have been teaching so much lately. And the answer is yes! Of course, with the Anniversary project I did with the 4th graders I painted a sample painting so their were about a dozen different subjects that I worked on so that I could simplify subjects for them to paint.

This painting is a spin-off of that. I painted North Entrance, an acrylic on 20″x30″ canvas, for the current show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Park. You can see it at BRAC for the next month. There is some lovely work in the show. Take the time to stop in and take a look.

Tiger Cubs Painting Class

A few weeks ago one of the moms of one of my Thursday Young Artists asked if I might teach her Tiger Cub scouts a lesson in color mixing and painting.

Last Wednesday, we held that class. Here they are working on their painting. That’s my friend Shelly helping me with the large group.

They were very enthusiastic and seemed to really enjoy painting. The only mishap was when I accidentally dropped a paint brush on one boys head when I was trying to help him. No permanent damage, just a little green paint in his hair. Oops!

They did a terrific job…eight beautiful paintings of the mountain and river!

Painting with Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary

This week I worked with the 4th grade students at Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School to produce the 175th Anniversary Painting. The first day Doug Stanley, County Administrator, reviewed the history of Warren County while I gave an overview of the material we would use in the paintings.

I also did a quick demo of some of the brush strokes they would use as well as a color mixing demo of certain colors they would use. They seemed fascinated.

Then on the second day of the project they started painting. I will share more of their work soon. Today was their final day of painting and Hagerstown TV came to do a story. The kids were so excited. Take a look at the story here.

Westminster Kennel Club Winner

The Opening Reception for the “Bark for the Park” Art Show and Sale was a huge success. We had a great turnout. And of course, the most popular girl at the party was Hickory, winner of Westminster. She was such a good sport. She came early and stayed the whole evening so everyone could pet her, have pictures made, etc. What a good sport! Thanks girl to you and your family.

And many thanks to everyone who came and purchased paintings and made donations to the dog park. I know we will raise the money we need so we can start building the park soon.

Just One More Day….

Just one more day to the Opening Reception of the “Bark for the Park” Art Show & Sale to benefit the Off-Leash Dog Park.

Several really good pieces of news have come my way this past week. First, Hickory, the Scottish Deerhound who won the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this year will be in attendance as our guest of honor. She believes in the off-leash park! 🙂

This is a painting that I did of Hickory this weekend. I thought she should have her portrait included among the other 46 dogs on display for the show.

The reception is from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Warren County Community Center. Please come out and invite all your friends to see the plans for the new dog park.

The second piece of good news is that several paintings have already sold!!! Yeah! The proceeds from sales at this show go to the dog park. Thanks to everyone who has already made a purchase to support the park. Of course, you can make a donation to the park without buying a painting. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Good Friends Make Great Volunteers :)

So you might ask yourself after reading this past weeks posts, just how does one person work with 16 kids during a one hour period for three days of painting with each kid painting something different and help them all come up with a superb painting? Good friends, that’s how.

Many thanks to two wonderful friends and artists, Shelly and Susan, who have helped over the last two weeks with the elementary schools that we have been working with on the 175th Anniversary Painting project. It would have been impossible for me to do this project without their help.

And, of course, many, many thanks to Kym who conceived this idea for the Blue Ridge Arts Council. And while she appears before the camera in this shot while being interviewed for a tv spot about the project, she has been behind the camera the last two weeks as our official photographer.

I am so grateful to Shelly, Susan and Kym for making this happen. Good job ladies!!!

Day 4 – Art Residency- Finish & Party

On the 4th and final day of the Art Residency we finished up our paintings! Yeah. And then we took a class photo. These are the wonderful 4th graders from A. S. Rhodes who created this beautiful painting.
