Tomorrow is the 3rd Thursday Art Walk.  Each 3rd Thursday in downtown Front Royal many shops extend their hours until 8 p.m. and from 5-8 p.m. artists demonstrate at several locations.  Tomorrow not only will they demonstrate but they will encourage viewers to paint as well.

The theme for tomorrow’s art walk is “Minds Wide Open”, the same theme as my current show at the arts council.  Marlene  Kline and I will be at BRAC, 305 East Main Street, demonstrating and hopefully helping you paint an abstract work of art.

Please join us and try your hand at painting.  We’d love to see you there.

Shown here today are some of the abstract works in the current show that Marlene and I have on display at BRAC.

The Opening Reception for the “Minds Wide Open” show was a great success.  Lots of people came; lots of good food and wine!

Many thanks to those who came out last night.  It was a wonderful evening for me and Marlene.  We appreciate the wonderful comments and support.

“Anyone who doesn’t know what soap tastes like has never bathed a dog!”  So the saying goes.  And anyone who has ever had a hound dog knows what a nasty dog smells like.  Especially if that hound dog is a scent hound….one that follows his knows to every disgusting smell in the world.

I have two such scent hounds, Truman and Jed.  And when we go to the cabin they find every pile of cow, deer, bear, rabbit and duck poop they can possibly smell out and roll in it.  The whole rolling in poop thing is primal, to cover their own scent so they can sneak up on their prey.  Like a box of Milk Bones is going to run when they go for their snack.  But anyway, they love to roll in poop.  And often that means several bathes in a weekend of rolling fun.

At my age, bending over a tub with a dog loaded with suds is tough on my back.  As luck would have it, on the drive home in little Wardensville, WV, right by the road we take home, is a Car Wash and they have added this wonderful Dog Wash.

It has an elevated bath tub with a ramp that the dogs can walk right up.  Well, more like drag right up because after stopping just one time and bathing them there they have figured out the routine and they don’t want to go up the ramp any more.    It is so nice to be able to stand and wash the stink off of them without breaking my back bending over a tub.

And check out the “services” available.  You can choose shampoo, conditioner, rinse, oatmeal shampoo, flea bath, blow dry or super blow dry.  And all of this for only $5.00 for 10 minutes.  WOW!  What a deal.  I can actually bathe both Truman and Jed in 10 minutes.  Although we don’t blow dry in that time.  They hate the sound of the loud blow dryer so we just shake dry and use our own towels.

While this is the look of two not so happy and wet dogs, I wish you could see the smile on my face after the event has ended.  🙂

Whoever thought of adding the Dog Wash to the little Car Wash that we pass each time on our way home was brilliant!

Truman can be so mean to Jed.  I have to play referee a lot while painting.  I will look around and there will be Truman laying in front of the doggie door and poor Jed sitting outside waiting to come in but Truman is blocking the way.  You can see the outline of Jed through the door in this photo.  I have to go over and move Truman to let Jed inside.  Basset Hounds are so ornery sometimes!

Bold Carrots is an oil on canvas measuring 10″x8″ and is available for $95.  This is another lesson piece that I have just finished up after it sat here for a little while.

Congratulations to Charlee, my art student who did this self-portrait as part of a contest at her school.  They chose one student from each grade and will be putting their portraits on the front cover of their yearbook.  Charlee won!

Great job girl and keep up the good work!

From time to time I get asked to do paintings of other things besides pets…like businesses.  This watercolor is of Jean’s Jewelers in downtown Front Royal.  It is  a fabulous jewelry and gift shop and Jean is the best!  Stop in and see her.

This is the reference photo that I used of Jean’s Jewelers.  You can see that I had to take a few liberties moving poles and trash containers to get a good composition.

Basset HoundToday’s painting is a watercolor of a basset hound dog.  It is on display at the show at Philip Carter Winery (www.pcwinery.com ) in Hume.

I posted this new basset painting today in honor of Truman.  His birthday is Sunday and he will be ten years old.  That doesn’t sound like a lot but it is pretty old for a basset hound.

baby TruTruman came to live with me when he was 5 1/2 weeks old.  He was so cute…most bassett puppies are.

Look at that face at 6 weeks old.

Tru-sweetAnd he was spoiled from the very beginning.   Here he is at 4 months.

Safety First

Truman has always been a pretty good sport.  Here he is posing with a bike helmet on to teach children the importance of bike safety.

truman has one too many

But he’s not always all about work.  Sometimes he parties.  In this case maybe a little too much.  It looks like he may have “passed out!”

Truman lets in flies

But then he gets right back to work guarding the front door….

Truman at the door

And the back door….

Truman's perch

And sometimes he stands guard at the window watching out that no squirrels or bunnies invade from the front yard.  (Well, he doesn’t actually stand guard.  It’s more like lay on the arm of the sofa guard.)

Truman in Chair

And all that work can make an old guy tired so he curls up in the chair for a rest sometimes.

Truman Birthday Hat

So here’s to you Truman.  Happy Birthday!  We love all your antics and the fun and joy you have brought to so many….even if  you are a poot head.

We love you anyway.

Halloween Fortune Teller at workDelilah’s, our art & gift gallery on Main Street, took part in a Halloween event for the kids Saturday night.  Rebecca came in dressed in a beautiful red mask to help me that evening.  (She and her husband have Fox Hill Pottery and they show beautiful work that you can see at Delilah’s.)  I dressed as Kelly of Delilah’s, the all-seeing  fortune-teller, and decided to break out the tarot card and tell the kids fortunes.

You can see me here telling one witch her fortune while others wait in line.   (Look how serious we are!)

Halloween Line up out the doorAnd a long line it was.  It snaked into the shop where the fortune-teller was waiting with the tarot deck .  And it went out the door…..

Halloween And the line got longer

….and in front of the shop on the sidewalk……

Halloween Line up and down the street……and down the street.  It seemed that it got longer and longer.  We couldn’t believe how successful our little fortune-telling operation was.  We gave out 600 pieces of candy and that was pretty much one per child.

I’m pretty sure that I told 300 hundred fortunes or more.  I was amazed how many wanted their fortune told and how they listened so intently to what I told them.  I really tried not to traumatize any kids.  I was the kind of fortune-teller that everyone wants to visit.  Only “good” fortunes here!  Besides, I didn’t want the kids to have to get years of therapy to recover from the fortune they were told on the Halloween of 2009 on Main Street in Front Royal.  🙂

Halloween Fortune Teller reward the patient witch with a treatAnd after they got their fortune, they, of course, got their treat!

The good news is that they all enjoyed it and no tricks were played.

Maybe the fortune-teller will come back and tell fortunes again.  You just never know….

Lemon underpaintingLast Wednesday night at Art Class we worked on an acrylic underpainting of a lemon.  Instead of oil paint we used acrylic paint and only using black and white we painted the shading that we saw of the lemon.

Lemon glazed painting

Last night at Art Class, with the underpainting of dry from last week, we glazed over the acrylic paint with an oil paint and a blending medium to add color to our lemon.  This is a technique that many painters use to get shading into their works.  It sometimes makes it easier for students to see the subtle differences in shades and tones.

The Lemon measures 5″x7″ on canvas panel and is available for $45 by contacting me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com .

KellyWalker SmallThe final 3rd Thursday Art Walk of the season is tonight from 5 – 8 p.m. in downtown Front Royal.  Be sure to come out and enjoy some refreshments and see the artist demonstrating.  Delilah’s will have a tent sale as well as demonstrations.  And I believe there will be pumpkin carving demonstrations at the Blue Ridge Arts Council.  Just in time for the season!  Come join us.  We’ll look forward to seeing you.

(That’s me painting during a 3rd Thursday Art Walk.  I was working on an abstract and I think I may have been channeling Jackson Pollack at the time!  🙂  )
